What Do You Understand By Humanitarian Services?

Humanitarian services are provided by groups or organizations to reduce the suffering of people after they experience a disaster or crisis that puts their lives in danger. There are many non-governmental organizations (NGOs), both local and international, that travel to affected areas to donate food, shelter, water and other household items.

The aim of every humanitarian service is to improve the lives of people by relieving pain. Those who participate in humanitarian services do not discriminate; they distribute material aid equally among people living in poverty within the community. Humanitarian services support disadvantage people to meet their need so that they can enjoy quality of life.

How Should Humanitarian Services Be Rendered And To Who?

Humanitarian services need to be provided to the homeless, women, refugees, and children who are suffering from malnutrition or illness. These people are vulnerable and need assistance from the government and other international bodies to come to their rescue. In Nigeria, Boko Haram, a terrorist organization, has killed thousands of innocent Nigerians. Many people have become homeless.

Both the federal government and NGOs make areas available for them to live for a short period of time until normalcy is restored to their land. They not only provide a place to stay but also offer food, clothes, and healthcare services from practitioners to treat those infected by diseases. I remember in 2014 when they kidnapped over 200 Chibok girls in Borno State.

Those girls spent more than a year in captivity. After the federal government successfully negotiated with them, the girls were released. Subsequently, the government, along with other international aid, sent them abroad to continue their education. Humanitarian service is necessary because it promotes their well-being.

No, but I have people who have experience from when they were posted to Maiduguri for the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC). Two of these people worked in non-governmental organizations where they helped the victims to meet their standards. They gained a lot of experience from the one year they spent in Borno State helping the people whom Boko Haram destroyed their houses, farms, and places of worship.

It is my interest to work with successful non-governmental organizations to support and assist victims because most of them have lost their loved ones when the crisis happened. Helping them will give them more strength to overcome the challenges. Their welfare is my priority, and those who developed post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) will be rehabilitated back into the society.
