Violet Markey and Theodore Finch are two young people who live in a tiny town in Indiana, where they are both unhappy. Nine months ago, Violet's sister was killed in a vehicle accident on a bridge near Violet's. Violet, on the other hand, has not been involved in another automobile accident after that episode. A few days before her sister's sixteenth birthday, she finds herself on the verge of jumping from the cliff. Violet is standing on the ledge when Finch approaches her and attempts to persuade her to end the relationship.

Finch and Violet are members of a group of students traveling throughout Indiana as part of a school assignment. Violet is subsequently found on Facebook, where Finch talks with her about her sister's vehicle accident, which has occurred. During their journey to Indiana, Finch takes Violet on a tour of the filming locations he has selected for the project. However, Finch's behavior has been increasingly irregular in recent months. He has gone absent for days at a time in the past without informing anyone of his whereabouts. Regardless of the cause, he and Violet take a dip underwater at the Blue Hole sometime later. When he emerges, Violet is enraged and threatens to leave if she gets what she wants. For him, forgiveness is out of the question because his mother is no longer a part of this reality; thus, forgiveness is out of the question.

It did not go well with Violet's parents when Finch and Violet decided to spend the night together. Violet's ex-boyfriend Roamer is yelled at by Finch for calling him a "freak" at school earlier in the day. Finch gets into his car and drives away from the site of the argument in the hallway. Violet, along with Finch's friend Charlie, is dismissed from school due to their involvement in the brawl. Mr. Embry, the guidance counselor at the school, suggests that Finch attend a support group session in a nearby town while they chat about their problems. Because of his chance encounter with Amanda Violet's buddy, the group learns about Amanda's bulimia and the fact that she has made two prior suicide attempts. Whenever Violet finishes school, she goes to her friend Finch's house. Finch's sister Kate, who has left the meeting to work, joins her in the chat once she returns. Finch approaches her at a tavern and asks her to tell him about their father, whom she has never met before. His promises haven't made her feel any less fearful of him. Violet will greet him when he arrives at Violet's home for the first time. She invites him to visit her in her room and speak with her. He orders her to leave the room, and she does as he requests.
