There are many different types of freelance online writing jobs for almost every category of the writing enthusiast, but in this article, I will focus on nine types.

1. Content Writing

Most businesses in this digital age have an online footprint to direct traffic to their product. One of the most efficient ways to do this is by content writing. The job of a content writer is to plan, write and edit web content for digital marketing purposes. The content is drafted in a way that communicates a message to a targeted audience using written articles with video, infographics, and other pictorials.

1. Copywriting

Copywriting is writing text for business with the sole purpose of persuading and convincing your target audience to buy a certain product. The difference with content writing is that whereas a content writer’s main goal is to inform and educate the readers, a copywriter is solely focused on selling a particular product therefore the language is more persuasive and direct.

1. Journalism

Online journalism is simply writing news articles for various online publications and websites. There are advantages that online journalism has over traditional print journalism including that one has no limitations of space as compared to print media. The articles can also be posted at any time as breaking news, as opposed to waiting for the newspaper the next day.

A ghostwriter is someone who writes literary articles of any kind on behalf of another party. The work is not credited to the ghostwriter, who receives a one-off payment and is not entitled to future royalties or residuals.

This is a creative form of writing where the writer uses non-factual prose for the sole purpose of entertaining the reader. Fiction writing can be used in the writing of short stories, movie and television scripts, and novels. It is storytelling in literary form.

Technical writing is the communication of specialized technical information to a target audience. This entails writing about specific subjects that require direction, instruction, or explanation. A good example is documenting processes like in user manuals or tutorials.

Students and professors are usually required to produce written works to document their scholarly pursuits. These include term papers, theses, research. Academic writing is formal and concise and is focused on evidence-based arguments and logical organization of the subject matter.

1. Feature Writing

A feature is a longer piece of non-fiction writing than a news story and it delves deeper into the particular issue. Well-written feature stories analyze, explain and provoke thought on a particular news story. They may also give another angle of the story.

1. Blogging

This is a diary-style, self-published article that generally tells a story that is set over a particular period of time. It is also used by companies to portray their products in real-world situations. The style is more informal and laid back.
