La historia de la Segunda Guerra Mundial es, quizás, uno de los eventos humanos más documentado: este conflicto, iniciado en 1.939 con la invasión de Alemania a Polonia y finalizado con la firma de la rendición de Japón en 1.945, está plagado de eventos de singular importancia que dan cuenta de hasta dónde es capaz de llegar el hombre para lograr sus objetivos. Militarmente hablando, durante ese período se llevaron a cabo miles de acciones militares por parte de todos los bandos que intervinieron. Hoy comentaré un libro que narra una de las operaciones más osadas e intrépidas de la Segunda Guerra Mundial.

El Escenario. / The Stage.

Quiero comentar sin revelar nada, así que condensaré aquí las circunstancias en torno a lo narrado en el libro, a modo de ambientación: en 1.943, Benito Musolinni, se encuentra comprometido política y militarmente en Italia, al punto que el rey de ese país (para entonces existía) Víctor Manuel, decide separarlo del mando y mantenerlo secuestrado para entregarlo a los aliados y sustituir al "Duce" (como llamaban a Benito) por Pietro Badoglio, un personaje nada mejor desde el punto de vista humano, con intenciones de negociar una rendición con los aliados. A Hitler no le conviene la pérdida de Italia porque representa su cobertura del sur para poder continuar operaciones en el resto de Europa y también en Rusia, por lo que decide rescatar a Mussolinni para reinstalarlo en el poder, recuperar el control en Italia y mantener la seguridad de su retaguardia.

I want to comment without revealing anything, so I will condense here the circumstances around what is narrated in the book, by way of setting: in 1943, Benito Mussolini is politically and militarily compromised in Italy, to the point that the king of that country ( by then it existed) Víctor Manuel, decides to separate him from command and keep him kidnapped to hand him over to the allies and replace the "Duce" (as they called Benito) with Pietro Badoglio, a character nothing better from the human point of view, with intentions of negotiating a surrender with the allies. The loss of Italy does not suit Hitler because it represents his cover for the south to be able to continue operations in the rest of Europe and also in Russia, so he decides to rescue Mussolini to reinstate him in power, regain control in Italy and maintain the security of his rear.

Todo es producto del genio militar del general alemán Kurt Student, del comandante Harold Mors y del capitán Otto Skorzeny como líder de la operación al mando de una unidad mixta de comandos y paracaidistas. Una historia donde planeadores y funiculares tienen presencia, en un momento en el cual los aliados estaban invadiendo con relativo éxito a Italia, solamente puede resultar si los ejecutantes tienen sangre fría y verdadero desprecio por la muerte y, aunque todo esto es historia y se puede conocer el resultado, el autor invoca una cantidad enorme de fuentes y registros que impulsan la acusiocidad y el detalle en todas las páginas de su obra, manteniendo en la lectura una ambientación que cautiva y emociona al mismo tiempo.

Against the clock, an operation is planned and prepared to reach the plateau where the Italian is kidnapped. Emociona y no defrauda: la crónica de Annussek sobre la Operación Roble, presenta un balance de calidad virtualmente perfecto entre la intrepidez y el valor demostrada con los hechos narrados junto con las inmensas cargas emocionales que los protagonistas vivieron, dándole al libro colores de aventura y ritmo de thriller que me llevó a leerlo en un fin de semana: quizás esto ocurrió porque fui soldado y el tema de por sí ya me apasiona, sin embargo, estoy seguro que para cualquier persona que le gusten esos juegos del gato y el ratón donde perder el juego es perder la vida, este libro los va a llevar por un camino que dejará el gusto de haberlo recorrido.

It thrills and does not disappoint: Annussek's chronicle of Operation Oak presents a virtually perfect balance of quality between the intrepidity and courage shown within the narrated facts along with the huge emotional charges the protagonists lived, giving the book tones of adventure and a thriller rhythm that led me to read it in just a weekend: perhaps this happened because I was a soldier and I am already passionate about the subject, however, I am sure that for anyone who likes those cat and mouse games where losing the game is maybe the same as losing life, this book will take you down a path that will leave you glad about traveled it.
