How to make a good review?

Reviewing is giving the reader a general idea of a book, a movie, a TV series, or even a song.

For this, we have to ask ourselves some questions, which apply to all the categories mentioned:

• What is it called?
• Who?
• What?
• When?
• How much?

Now, how do we adapt this to the different reviews?

When it comes to books

First, we will mention the title, and almost in parallel this, the author. It may be that you mention one before the other and that is indistinct, but you cannot avoid any of them.

If I am going to review the Harry Potter books, I automatically have to indicate that their author is J.K. Rowling.
There is no book without someone who has written it and that someone is recognized by his (or her) work.

What is the book about? When I say its title, I have to mention the main themes of the book, without revealing to the reader any key facts of the story. This is not a matter of telling the story, but of inviting someone else to read this material.

At this point, it is important that we mention the literary genre. Is it narrative, lyrical, or literary? Also, you will talk about the characters here.

When was it written? When reviewing, it is essential to indicate this fact, since this often provides a historical context for the text. Of course, this is not always the case. How many pages does this book have? If I am inviting someone to read it, I have to refer to its length. Whoever is going to choose to read the work or not, will want to know how long it can take. And as for books, there are many people who prefer short works. Or on the contrary, many are only encouraged by stories of more than 500 pages.

What about movies and TV series?

Again, we begin with the title, and as for the who, there are two fundamental people, and two points of view that cannot be ignored at the time of making a review:

  Reality: you will cover this category by mentioning the actors
  Fiction: the characters

And from the characters, we go into the story, into what? Again, this is not about revealing the story. It's about giving a few drops to our audience to persuade them that they have to see yes or yes this that we have liked so much.

Para esto, tenemos que hacernos algunas preguntas, que aplican a todas las categorías mencionadas:

• ¿Qué?
• ¿Cuándo?

Ahora, ¿cómo adaptamos esto a las diferentes reseñas?

Cuando se trata de libros

En primer lugar mencionaremos el título, y casi en paralelo este, el autor o autora. Puede ser que digas uno antes que otro y eso es indistinto, pero no poder obviar ninguno.

Si yo voy a hacer una reseña de los libros de Harry Potter, automáticamente tengo que indicar que su autora es J.K. Rowling. No hay libro sin alguien que lo haya escrito y ese alguien se reconoce por su (o sus) obra.

¿De qué se trata el libro? Al decir su título, tengo que mencionar los temas principales del mismo, sin revelar al lector ningún dato clave de la historia. Esto no es cuestión de contar la historia, sino de invitar a otro a que lea este material.

En este punto, es importante que mencionemos el género literario. ¿Es narrativo, lírico o literario? Además, este es el momento de presentar a los personajes de la historia.

¿Cuándo se escribió? Al reseñar, es fundamental indicar este dato, ya que muchas veces esto brinda un contexto histórico al texto. Claro que no siempre es así. Para el caso de Harry Potter, continuando con este ejemplo, el año en el que se escribió no es de mayor importancia, porque se trata de una obra de Ciencia Ficción.

¿Cuántas páginas tiene este libro? Si estoy invitando a alguien a leerlo, tengo que hacer referencia a su longitud. Quien vaya a elegir leer o no la obra, querrá saber cuánto tiempo puede tomarle. Y en cuanto a libros, hay muchas personas que prefieren obras cortas. O por el contrario, a muchos los incentivan únicamente las historias de más de 500 páginas.

¿Qué pasa con las películas y series de televisión?

Nuevamente, empezamos con el título, y en cuanto al quién, hay dos personas fundamentales, y dos puntos de vista que no pueden obviarse al momento de hacer una reseña:

• Personas:
  Actores / actrices
  Director / directora

• Perspectivas:
  Realidad: vas a cubrir esta categoría al mencionar a los actores
  Ficción: los personajes

Y a partir de los personajes, nos adentramos en la historia, en el ¿qué? Nuevamente, esto no se trata de revelar lo que ocurre, sino que es cuestión de brindarle unas gotas a nuestra audiencia para persuadirla de que tiene que ver sí o sí esto que a nosotros tanto nos ha gustado (o no).

Nuevamente el *género es fundamental aquí. ¿Es una comedia, un drama, es terror o suspenso, es romance? Hay que indicarlo. Todos tenemos nuestras preferencias y de más está decir que hay personas que jamás elegirán para ver una película o serie de terror.

¿Cuándo fue filmada? Acá, si bien puede pasar lo mismo que con los libros, hay un aspecto visual difícil de omitir. Muchos prefieren visionar contenido en Full HD, o en HD, y no soportan la calidad de un cine que data del 1980. Por el contrario, están quienes valoran mucho más las creaciones hasta en blanco y negro. Dar nota del año de la serie o película, es indispensable cuando estamos haciendo la reseña.

Canciones

Los mismos datos. Pero en este punto hay algunos detalles que podrías tener en cuenta:

• ¿Quién es el autor de la letra y de la música? ¿O es un cantautor?
• ¿Quién es el cantante?
• ¿Cuántas personas han cantado esta canción y quiénes son?
• ¿Cuántas versiones de la canción hay?

Además, un dato interesante es que indiques el álbum al que pertenece la canción, ya que la mayoría de ellos son temáticos y apuntan a un objetivo. Si a alguien le gusta lo que está escuchando, podrías facilitarle el camino para que se deleite con más canciones similares.

Reseñas negativas

No todas tienen que ser positivas y buscar convencer a alguien de que acceda a este material. Podés buscar exactamente lo contrario, explicando, en el desarrollo del tema, los aspectos por los cuáles no te ha gustado lo que has leído, visto o escuchado. Siempre con respeto.

Incluso, todo aquello que vos no preferís, hasta quizás sea justamente lo que tu lector sí elegiría.
