In terms of care and quality, what are the main differences between public and private hospitals?
The difference between public and private hospitals in terms of care and quality includes the following which have been shared below...
Waiting Time and Access to Services
- Public hospitals have longer waiting times for non-emergency issues due to high numbers of patients with limited doctors. Whereas in private hospitals: it is faster to attend to patients and medical service is given faster to patients because of fewer patients.
Facilities and Equipment:
- Public hospitals have more advanced facilities which are mostly older than private ones. Whereas;
- Private hospitals have fewer facilities, but advanced technology and a more suitable environment.
Cost
A public hospital is controlled by the government and the cost of treatment are usually cheap.
In a private hospital, it is owned by an individual, and treatment is usually cost or higher.
Quality of Care
- Public hospitals are good in terms of quality care, but there is usually variability due to location and funding.
- Private hospitals offer higher quality care than public hospitals due to their better facility.
In your country, how the cost of treatment is different from private and public hospitals?
In Nigeria, it is not everyone that can afford the services of private hospitals which is why most people go to public hospitals for treatment. The cost of treatment in private hospitals is higher than that of a public hospital for instance a government hospital can charge you ₦10000 for treatment, whereas in private hospitals it can be ₦50000 which is far higher than that of a public hospital.
Which type of hospital do you prefer for regular check-ups, and why?
I prefer to go for regular checkups in private hospitals than going to a public hospital where I would be delayed. The reason why I go for private hospitals is because of the time factor and quality of equipment in private hospitals a public hospitals. Private hospitals pay more attention to patients faster than public hospitals.
Have you ever been hospitalized? How was your experience?
Yes, I have ever been hospitalized in a public hospital and I was delayed in the hospital before I was finally attended to. As I was rushed to the hospital, they took me to the emergency room kept me there, and went looking for my folder (file) which took some hours before the doctor came and attended to me. I was not happy with the way I was delayed in the hospital.
