Sugarcane Crops and Their Utilization Into Sugar
Hello everyone, meet me at this post. I hope this post can add insight and information about something that is around us.
We can not deny the importance of the use of sugar as an ingredient to improve the taste and texture of food and beverage, that's why sugar is a staple that is always in use every day to meet the needs of society. Its use is also needed by the body, the calories contained in sugar are a source of energy for the human body.
We all know what sugar is made of.
As far as I know as a teacher, the sugar we consume every day is made from a plant called Sugar Cane. However, other sugars can be made with the use of honey, beets, and coconut juice in Palm water. You also need to know that sugar can come from certain plants without having to be processed into sugar, one of which is the stevia plant which is a sugar substitute Plant (natural sugar).
The process of making sugarcane plants into sugar is complicated and long, based on one of the sites I was looking for, making market sugar made from sugar cane must pass through the stages :
The process of refining or refining sugar is the final stage before the sugar is consumed, the process of refining sugar consists of the process of affination, carbonization, decolorization, boiling, and recovery - https://indonesiabaik.id.
The following is an infographic of the process of making market sugar from sugar cane, source of the infographic : https://indonesiabaik.id

Sugarcane itself is a type of plant that has physical characteristics that are easy to recognize, some of the basic characteristics are :
- Sugarcane has a stem that does not branch and generally stands upright, another characteristic of the STEM is that it has a thick skin that covers the flesh of the sugarcane plant, and the most obvious is that it has a stratified stem perpendicular to the top.
- It has elongated and imperfect leaves, in some of the elongated leaves there is a layer of white hairs that, when touched, itch a little because they stick to the skin.
- The roots are filamentous.
- And this plant grows well in tropical climates.
In local communities such as in my area, sugar cane can be consumed directly after ripening and past the planting period of approximately between 6 to 1 year. The process of consuming it is very easy, ripe sugar cane stalks can be cut directly from the base of the roots. After the cut, the skin is peeled first, the skin of the sugar cane plant has a thick shape. After the skin is peeled, part of the sugar cane plant can already be consumed.
However, the flesh of the dense sugarcane plant cannot be eaten, the high water content and also taste very sweet are the main goals in enjoying this plant. That is why sugarcane in Indonesia is also generally made into juice or sugarcane juice, the pulp of the sugarcane flesh will be thrown away and not used anymore.
But the leaves of sugarcane plants themselves will usually be used as food for cows or food for cattle farmers, this is because the leaves of sugarcane plants are rich in fiber for the growth of cows.
With the high demand for sugar that is used by humans to enrich the taste of food and beverages, the cultivation of sugar cane continues to be a plant that has economic value. Indonesia is one of the countries that use sugar cane as a material for making sugar, however, according to the Economic Research Service website
According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the United States is one of the largest sugar producing countries in the world besides India, Thailand, Pakistan, and China.
In the end, sugarcane is the main source of making sugar crystals, of course, this is one of the many important commodities in the world economy and one of them is Indonesia.
That's all my simple posts for today, hopefully useful, and best regards to you all.
