Who is responsible for the murders in Doubt (Mob Justice).
The phenomenon of mob justice is seen in many places and is an act against the law (taking the law into one's own hands). In Bangladesh, there have been many cases of people being hurt or killed under suspicion. This mob justice has increased manifold since last August 5. Mob justice is when a justice is taken into one's own hands outside of the legal process and sometimes there are cases of extrajudicial killings.
According to a media report, 800 people have been killed in mass beatings in Bangladesh from 2011 to 2018. Then from 2019 to 2023, 286 people were killed in the massacre. Most of them were beaten to death under suspicion. Suspected robbers, kidnappers, thieves have been killed.
Let me share some real facts I know:
Case 1: Beaten to death on suspicion of theft: An old man was found lying in Nin's van at night and was mistaken for a thief and others in the village called him and beat him up. The old man died at one stage of Pituni. Later it is known that the old man is not a thief but a mentally unbalanced person. The old man is mentally retarded and often runs away from home. But what will happen after knowing this news, he has been killed.
Case 2: Death of an old woman after she was suspected of abducting a boy. When a woman comes to a village and her behavior is suspicious, the market people beat her up and later tie her to a tree and die on the spot. This Mobjustice is a very terrible decision that takes the lives of innocent people.
Fact 3: Current social media is hot for a murder in Bangladesh. Where the students of a university tortured and killed a man suspected of being a thief. Two days ago in the university, a young man was beaten up in the hall room as a thief and at one point he was fed rice and beaten again after eating. When the condition worsened, he was taken to the hospital and the doctor on duty there declared him dead. It is later revealed that Jabuq is a mentally unstable person and has no family where he can go and beg for food. After learning about such incident, there was a storm of condemnation on social media against the students involved in this incident of that university.
Weakness of the country's rule of law and lack of public confidence in the law. It may also be the case that such activities are done to dominate. Also due to many reasons this mob justice can be economic impact, political unrest, social inequality, neglect of duty by law enforcers, degradation of social values.
We need to build a strong and independent judiciary to end mob justice. People should be made aware and respect the law. For this, mass media campaign should be carried out so that the general public takes refuge in the law without hitting anyone on suspicion.
Good luck to you.
