Today I'm going to talk about one of the most popular real-time strategy games of all time, Age of Empires. Although many must know it, boys and girls under 18 may not have had the opportunity to play this great game yet. Age of Empires II is a real-time strategy game set in the Middle Ages. The player must advance in the Ages starting with the High Middle Ages until the Imperial Age, in total there are 4 ages.

Each age has developed skills or functions that will help the player gain an advantage against the enemy. The first version of this game was released in 1997 by Ensemble Studios. Most versions are for PC (Microsoft and MacOS).

Gameplay

Age of Empires in a 3D game, Top down. In which the player has a top view of the map. You have the ability to build and recruit soldiers or villagers, as well as develop technologies. As in real life, the economy in this game is super important. We must plan how we will spend our resources and choose well as this may affect the future. For example, if we have a certain amount of resources and we spend it all on warriors, we will not have to develop technology or advance to the next age, remember that the first to reach the Imperial age will have a better chance of winning because their army will be more developed.

Game modes

There are 3 game modes:

AOE game main menu
  • Campaign: In this mode we play individually with historical characters according to the selected story.
  • Individual or Multiplayer mode: Here we can play against the PC or against friends via LAN or Internet. In this mode we will start from 0 to build our empire. The player who managed to advance the ages faster will have more advantages over the other.
  • Map Editor Mode: In this mode we can build our own map or scenario with the characters we want and create wonderful legendary battles.

Personal experience

I currently play Age of Empires HD version, it's basically the same game but with improved graphics. Since the graphs of 1999 today would not be very striking. I remember that the first time I was able to play it was in a cyber cafe precisely in 1999, it was very popular at that time. When I started the game I really didn't know what to expect but I liked what I saw and ended up falling in love with this game.

Just thinking that you had to start building an Empire with only 3 villagers made me very excited, it was to not detach from the pc. We could spend playing in a single game from an hour to 4 hours! It was crazy.

Starting a game. Persians vs Spanish

Playing against people was the best since playing against the computer was very difficult for me at that time. I was only 9 years old. At that time I played with any civilization because I didn't know the strengths or weaknesses of each one.

Over the years they released new versions of the game with new civilizations. I didn't play this game very often but every time I played it I enjoyed it.

One of the things that I liked was that in the campaign mode we were told stories or real historical facts and we had to somehow play that story. We could play with renowned historical figures such as Joan of Arc, Genghis Khan, even in an AOE version we played with Simon Bolívar, among others. I love ancient history and I liked listening to the story narratives I selected to play.

Food is very important in the Persian civilization.

With that game I learned a lot of history, and when I watched world history classes I was already familiar with the subject. So if you ask me something about world history I probably know about it.

The civilization he played with was always the Persians. This civilization has strong war elephants ideal for destroying walls or buildings and they also had a large amount of life so they could withstand multiple attacks.

First attack of the Spanish.

With 50 war elephants and 50 paladin horses you could easily destroy an entire civilization. Of course, it all depends on whether the opponent knows what he is doing, he could put us in danger.

If I had to give this game a score I would give it 9/10 because even though it is an old game it is quite complete, I give it 9 points because the computer's AI is somewhat deficient and sometimes behaved strangely.

First scouting attack.

I do not share a gameplay of the game because the game I played lasted more than two hours, and to upload a video of that duration in Venezuela you have to spend two days uploading it to YouTube. No joking.

I have always had this game somewhere saved on my pc and when I feel like playing it I play a game. Well this has been my initial experience of the first versions of this game. Age of Empires I and Age of Empires II.

Minimum requirements:

These requirements are for the original game from 1999. So you should probably be able to run it without any problems.

  • CPU: Pentium 166MHz or higher processor
  • RAM: 32 MB of RAM
  • OS: Microsoft® Windows® 95/98/Me/XP/NT 4.0 with service pack 5.
  • Hard Disk: 300 MB
  • Sound: Sound card, speakers or headphones required for audio.
  • Peripheral: Mouse or compatible pointing device.

Here I say goodbye and I hope you liked this game.

Kind Regards!.

Greetings my friend! I loved your review of this classic video game, truth be told, although I haven't played it, I love games where you have to constantly think to build a civilization and gain territory. My brother had the opportunity to play it on the Nintendo DS, and he loved it. Many blessings, excellent content.

Yes, this is a great game. Although I don't play it much because of the time a game can last, I always have it saved for when I feel like playing. Apparently you and your brother play a lot hehe. Thanks for commenting, regards 😊

This is like one my all time favorite.. I want to play it again :D

I've certainly never played this video game, but if I've heard of it once, it seems to have been one of the forerunners of this type of battle game.

Greetings!

This game no matter how much I play it, because it turns out that my cousins are fans and still are of Age of Empires, and because my attraction in the game is in building, I like the activity of evolving. Fishing, planting and harvesting, I really love it. All the development of the game, as you mention in your post, is immersed in real life, in survival, in evolution. Greetings
