The first sprint qualifying saw Max Verstappen overtake Lewis Hamilton at the start to claim pole position in the British Grand Prix. Valtteri Bottas and Charles Leclerc kept their position on the second row.

Formula 1 kicked off the first ever sprint qualifying race with a race of just 17 laps. From the start, Max Verstappen's front brake was on fire but still managed to start much better than Lewis Hamilton and took the lead in the 1st corner. It was an exciting start and after resisting the pressure, Verstappen was never troubled again during the remaining laps.

A little further back, Fernando Alonso starting from 11th position quickly found himself 5th. He then slowed down the Lando Norris for a long time, then Daniel Ricciardo. Despite a strong challenge, he kept Sebastian Vettel behind him to finally gain 4 places on the starting grid.

The big loser of this "sprint race" was Sergio Perez. 5th at the start, he spun off on the fifth lap. After narrowly avoiding contact with the wall, he returned to the track between the Haas of Mick Schumacher and Nikita Mazepin. Blocked behind Nicholas Latifi, he gave up at the start of the final lap and will start last.

Max Verstappen pocketed 3 points, Hamilton 2 and 1 for Bottas. In the standings, the Dutchman therefore has 185 points, 33 more than Hamilton.
