A Skin that Smiles at you.

Souce

That future where humans and humanoid robots look almost the same is already underway, scientists in Japan have developed a method to implant living human skin on robot faces, a technology that promises to revolutionize various areas including robotics, cosmetic testing and medical training.

It all started two years ago when Professor Takeuchi and his team at the University of Tokyo managed to cover a motorized robotic finger with skin made of living human cells, through bioengineering, this impressive achievement has paved the way for the future development of more realistic androids. As if that were not enough, this skin is capable of self-repair and is sensitive to touch, initially the skin applied to the robotic finger worked like a glove without actually being connected to the sub-finger, but natural human facial skin is much more complex as it is anchored to underlying muscle tissue by connective tissue ligaments.

This structure is what allows us to display a wide range of facial expressions, scientists had previously attempted to implant living skin onto synthetic surfaces, but they had not been effective on concave surfaces and affected the smooth appearance of the synthesized skin, with these limitations in mind Takeuchi and his team developed a new anchoring system based on small V-shaped perforations in the synthetic surface.

They created a human facial mold with these perforations and coated it with a gel containing collagen and human thermal fibroblasts, cells responsible for the production of connective tissues, part of the gel infiltrated into the perforations While the rest remained on the surface of the mold, After 7 days of culture the gel formed a layer of human skin firmly anchored to the mold and in a second experiment the team applied the gel to a perforated silicone substrate and cultured the skin resulting in a simplified human skin face capable of smiling when moving. two barrels connected to the substrate.

Although this technology is still in an early stage, the advances are promising and impressive, researchers believe that in the future they will be able to create thicker, more realistic skin by incorporating sweat glands, sebaceous glands, pores, blood vessels, fat and nerves.

We are witnessing an advance that could transform not only the appearance of robots but also our interaction with them, making them more human and realistic than ever, the future of science fiction humanoids could be closer than we imagine, when it arrives you will be able to see all the details here on my blog.
