En 1876 recibió una beca del emperador Pedro II de Brasil, que le permitiría estudiar en Francia. Allí compartió con Alexándre Cabanel, quien se convertiría en uno de sus grandes maestros.
En el año 1882 rgresó a Brasil y se convirtió en uno de los máximos representantes de la pintura realista brasileña.
El 13 de noviembre de 1899 murió apuñalado por el esposo de su amante, frente al Hotel Central. Para ese entonces tenía 49 años.
A continuación les presentamos tres de sus obras para que usted escoja la que más le guste para escribir en torno a ella. la primera se titula Recado difícil (1895), la segunda, El inoportuno (1898) y la tercera Anhelo (1899).

In 1882 he returned to Brazil and became one of the greatest representatives of Brazilian realist painting.
On November 13, 1899, he was stabbed to death by his lover's husband, in front of the Central Hotel. At that time he was 49 years old.
