None of his biographers are precise regarding the date of his birth. For some he was born in the year 1526, while others say it was in 1530, in Breda or Bruegel.

He had a decisive influence on his sons, who followed in his footsteps as painters: Pieter Brueghel, the young man, and Jan Brueghel, the old man. This adjective for Jan is due to the fact that his children also followed in his and their grandfather's footsteps in painting. That is why it is said that Pieter Brueghel, the elder, created a dynasty of Dutch painters.

He belonged to the Flemish Renaissance movement.

He died on September 9, 1569 in the Brussels region, Belgium.
