El pintor italiano mejor conocido como Caravaggio fue un maestro de la luz, combinando la anatomía humana con los efectos de la iluminación para obtener dramatismo en sus obras. Su técnica fue conocida como tenebrismo ya que oscurecía las sombras y transfiguraba objetos con haces de luz. Indudablemente, su influencia fue determinante en el arte barroco. Nació en Milán en 1571 y murió en Ercole en 1610 a la temprana edad de 39 años.

Las obras pictóricas de Caravaggio fueron en su mayoría religiosas pero no fue así desde sus inicios. Los modelos preferidos de Caravaggio eran gente de la más baja condición social: prostitutas, chicos de la calle y mendigos. Esto generalmente le traía reproches de sus clientes ya que sus figuras religiosas eran de un realismo no comprendido en aquella época.

Entre 1600 y 1606 fue, tal vez, el pintor más famoso y conocido de Roma gracias al contrato que le hiciera el Cardenal Del Monte para decorar la Capilla Contarelli. Su técnica del tenebrismo y su barroco realista fueron las tendencias de El martirio de San Mateo y La vocación de San Mateo.

Por un lado fue muy criticado por el fuerte contraste en el claroscuro que inclinaban la visualización hacia los elementos con luces proyectadas; “muy excesivo” para algunos pintores y sin usar bocetos preparatorios. Pero otros pintores lo aclamaron y consideraron maestro del arte religioso.

Su influencia fue notoria en artistas como Rubens, Diego Velásquez y Rembrandt; y la generación posterior incluso fueron llamados caravaggistas.

A continuación les presentaremos tres de sus obras para que usted escoja la que más los motive a escribir. La primera se llama: "Los jugadores de cartas" (1594), la segunda, "San Jerónimo escribiendo" (1608) y la última, "El entierro de Cristo" (1602-1603).

For this 72nd edition of "Art and Writing" the guest will be the Italian painter Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio.

The Italian painter better known as Caravaggio was a master of light, combining human anatomy with lighting effects to obtain drama in his works. His technique was known as tenebrism because he darkened shadows and transfigured objects with beams of light. Undoubtedly, his influence was decisive in Baroque art. He was born in Milan in 1571 and died in Ercole in 1610 at the early age of 39.

Caravaggio's pictorial works were mostly religious but this was not the case from the beginning. Caravaggio's favorite models were people of the lowest social status: prostitutes, street children and beggars. This usually brought him reproaches from his clients since his religious figures were of a realism not understood at that time.

Between 1600 and 1606 he was perhaps the most famous and well-known painter in Rome, thanks to the contract he was given by Cardinal Del Monte to decorate the Contarelli Chapel. His tenebrism technique and his realistic baroque were the tendencies of The Martyrdom of St. Matthew and The Vocation of St. Matthew.

On the one hand he was much criticized for the strong contrast in the chiaroscuro that inclined the visualization towards the elements with projected lights; "very excessive" for some painters and without using preparatory sketches. But other painters acclaimed him and considered him a master of religious art.

His influence was notorious in artists such as Rubens, Diego Velasquez and Rembrandt; and the later generation were even called Caravaggists.
