The duties of the priest are many but the primary reason is to minister to God for the needs of the people. He stands between the people and God. He brings instructions and commandments from God to the people. He in turn brings the people's petitions to God by way of of prayer. He is like the man that stands between God and man.
"Every high priest is selected from among the people and is appointed to represent the people in matters related to God, to offer gifts and sacrifices for sins. He is able to deal gently with those who are ignorant and are going astray, since he himself is subject to weakness." - Hebrews 5:1-2 NIV
He exist to help the ignorant and those that are out of the to get back to God.
"All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation." - 2 Corinthians 5:18 NIV
The ministry of reconciliation is to reconcile sinners and backsliders back to God.
He is also the minister of God to the flock. I mean the saved children of God. It's not only to sinners but to the flock of Christ.
"To the elders among you, I appeal as a fellow elder and a witness of Christ’s sufferings who also will share in the glory to be revealed: 2 Be shepherds of God’s flock that is under your care, watching over them—not because you must, but because you are willing, as God wants you to be; not pursuing dishonest gain, but eager to serve." - 1 Peters 5:1-2
The responsibility of nurturing the members of Christ body is upon the minister. With this few points I hope you understand what I am trying to explain.
There is no priesthood today. The writer of Hebrews was talking about how Jesus in our high priest based on what the Old Testament system was.
