En aquel tiempo, se fue Jesús al territorio de Judea y Transjordania, y de nuevo se le fue acercando la gente; él los estuvo enseñando, como era su costumbre. Se acercaron también unos fariseos y le preguntaron, para ponerlo a prueba: "¿Le es lícito a un hombre divorciarse de su esposa?" Él les respondió: "¿Qué les prescribió Moisés?" Ellos contestaron: "Moisés nos permitió el divorcio mediante la entrega de un acta de divorcio a la esposa". Jesús les dijo: "Moisés prescribió esto, debido a la dureza del corazón de ustedes.

Pero desde el principio, al crearlos, Dios los hizo hombre y mujer. Por eso dejará el hombre a su padre y a su madre y se unirá a su esposa y serán los dos una sola cosa.
De modo que ya no son dos, sino una sola cosa. Por eso, lo que Dios unió, que no lo separe el hombre". Ya en casa, los discípulos le volvieron a preguntar sobre el asunto. Jesús les dijo:

"Si uno se divorcia de su esposa y se casa con otra, comete adulterio contra la primera. Y si ella se divorcia de su marido y se casa con otro, comete adulterio". Palabra del Señor.
Los verdaderos discípulos de Cristo aguardan la llegada del justo Juez en el amor, en la paciencia y en la fidelidad. Esta constancia humilde y perseverante, franca y decisiva es la verdadera fuerza profética del discípulo al vivir su identidad y misión en la Iglesia y en el mundo. Tal «paciencia en el sufrimiento», recomendada por Santiago, no es la simple y pasiva “resignación”, sino que equivalente a una tenacidad motivada por los clásicos ejemplos del pasado –en especial por el del célebre Job– y toda ella orientada hacia el Señor que viene.

Respondiendo a la pregunta capciosa de los fariseos, Jesús afirma la indisolubilidad del matrimonio, remitiéndose al designio original de Dios. Cita dos textos del Génesis que expresan la básica igualdad de los dos sexos y su mutua complementariedad en el matrimonio. Y concluye: «lo que Dios ha unido, que no lo separe el hombre». Ese plan no coincide, por cierto, con la posterior tolerancia de la ley de Moisés (Cfr. Dt 24,1-4).

At that time, Jesus went to the territory of Judea and Transjordan, and again the people were approaching him; he was teaching them, as was his custom. Some Pharisees also came and asked him, to put him to the test: "Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife?" He answered them, "What did Moses prescribe for you?" They replied, "Moses allowed us to divorce by delivering a divorce certificate to the wife." Jesus told them, "Moses prescribed this because of your hard hearts.

But from the beginning, in creating them, God made them male and female. That is why a man will leave his father and his mother and be united to his wife and the two will be one. So they are no longer two, but one thing. Therefore, what God has joined together, let not man put asunder". Back at home, the disciples asked him again about the matter. Jesus told them:

"If one divorces his wife and marries another, he commits adultery against the former. And if she divorces her husband and marries another, she commits adultery." Lord's word. The true disciples of Christ await the arrival of the just Judge in love, patience and fidelity. This humble and persevering constancy, frank and decisive, is the true prophetic strength of the disciple in living his identity and mission in the Church and in the world. Such "patience in suffering", recommended by Santiago, is not the simple and passive "resignation", but equivalent to a tenacity motivated by the classic examples of the past -especially by that of the famous Job- and all of it oriented towards the Lord who comes.

Responding to the tricky question of the Pharisees, Jesus affirms the indissolubility of marriage, referring to God's original plan. He cites two texts from Genesis that express the basic equality of the two sexes and their mutual complementarity in marriage. And he concludes: “what God has joined together, let no man put asunder”. That plan does not coincide, by the way, with the later tolerance of the law of Moses (Cf. Dt 24,1-4).
