Today it's time to complete the task proposed by @gbenga about Exchanges and Wallets. A very interesting topic that was very well explained by @gbenga in the class.
When we decide to invest in Bitcoin or any other cryptocurrency we must be clear about what we are going to do with those cryptoassets; if we are going to invest to make Hold (have them) or if we are going to acquire them to trade them.
The first thing we must define is what we are going to do with those cryptoassets.
Having made this initial clarification and in order to perform the task proposed by @gbenga in a clearer and more complete way, I will try to explain intuitively what is a wallet and what is an exchange.
The terms wallts and exchanges are often confused, but they are two completely different things.
The wallets would come to fulfill the function of deposits of our cryptocurrencies for safekeeping, while the exchanges are a kind of exchange house, ie where we can exchange between different cryptocurrencies or exchange them for FIAT currencies.
An exchange is a platform where buyers and sellers meet and transact by offering and demanding the different currencies.
What is a wallet?
A wallet is a program that allows you to store cryptocurrencies and can be:
- cold wallet
- or hot wallet.
Hot wallets are those that work only online and the best ones are decentralised wallets such as Exodus.
Cold wallets are offline and the cryptocurrencies are stored on a kind of device very similar to a pendrive. They are only online when we connect the device to a computer.
These wallets are more secure as they are offline and safe from any hacking attempt. They are very useful when our objective is to save for the medium or long term.
A wallet itself does not store your currency, but will rely on a public key (wallet address) and a private key. Wallets will also have one or more private keys, which makes them very secure.
What is an exchange?
An exchange is a place where cryptocurrencies can be exchanged for each other, and cryptocurrencies for fiat currency. Nowadays, exchanges are much better known than wallets, as these often offer wallets with which they carry out their transactions, but there we will not have 100% control of our funds.
Exchanges are very useful and practical when our goal is to trade, (exchange) because we can make exchanges quickly and we have knowledge of our balance at all times.
Therefore, when we make the decision to invest in cryptocurrencies we will have to be clear about what we are going to do with them, in order to choose between a wallet and an exchange. In both we will be able to store our cryptocurrencies but they are really very different.
What is the difference between a wallet and an exchange?
In a wallet we have full control of our private key and this is the only way to access our cryptocurrencies, so they are more secure in storing our cryptocurrency.
Exchanges on the other hand offer trading services (buying and selling cryptocurrencies).
Although they usually offer wallets in which we can have access to our private keys, here we depend on the security measures adopted by these platforms.
We will therefore choose a wallet or an exchange depending on our purpose.
If our objective is to store our cryptocurrencies, we will choose a wallet as they are very easy to access and very secure. In addition, they usually have a backup system to recover our cryptocurrencies in case the device fails.
If our objective is the exchange, we would probably choose an exchange for its functionality and to avoid paying constant commissions for transferring funds from the wallet to the exchange.
Exchanges are simple, very easy to use, but here we will resign some security because we will not have total control of our private keys, as this will reside in the exchange and as I mentioned, we will be left to the luck of the security measures that the exchange decides to adopt.
If from one day to the next the exchange disappears we will lose all our cryptoassets with no possibility of recovering them, beyond any legal action that may be initiated.
In short, the purchase of cryptocurrencies must be planned and thought out in order to decide where to store them.

Hoy llega el turno de completar la tarea propuesta por @gbenga sobre Exchanges y Wallets. Un tema muy interesante y que fue muy bien explicado por @gbenga en la clase.
Cuando decidimos invertir en Bitcoin o en cualquier otra cryptomoneda debemos tener en claro que es lo que haremos con esos cryptoactivos; si vamos a invertir para hacer Hold (tenerlos) o bien si vamos a adquirirlas para negociarlas.
Lo primero que debemos definir es que vamos a hacer con esos cryptoactivos.
Una vez hecha esta aclaración inicial y para poder realizar la tarea propesta por @gbenga de manera más clara y completa, intentaré explicar de manera intuitiva que es una billetera y que es un exchange.
Generalmente se suele confundir los terminos wallts y exchanges, pero son dos cosas totalmente diferentes.
Las wallets vendrían a cumplir la función de depósitos de nuestras cryptomonedas para su resguardo, mientras que los exchanges son una especie de casa de cambio, es decir donde podemos intercambiar entre las diferentes cryptomonedas o bien cambiarlos por monedas FIAT.
Un exchange es una plataforma en donde se reúnen compradores y vendedores realizan transacciones ofreciendo y demandando las diferentes monedas.
¿Qué es una billetera?
Una billetera es un programa que le permite almacenar cryptomonedas y puede ser:
- billetera fría
- o billetera caliente.
Las billeteras calientes son aquellas que funcionan únicamente en línea y las mejores son las descentralizadas como por ejemplo Exodus.
Las billeteras frías están fuera de línea y las cryptomonedas se almacenan en una especie de dispositivo muy parecido a un pendrive. Unicamente están en línea en el momento en que conectamos el dispositivo a una computadora.
Estas billeteras son más seguras ya que al estar fuera de línea y están a salvo de cualquier intento de hackeo. Son muy útiles cuando nuestro objetivo es guardar por un mediano o largo plazo.
Una billetera en sí misma no almacena su moneda, sino que esta dependerá de una clave pública (dirección de wallet) y una clave privada. Las billeteras también tendrán una o más llaves privadas lo cual le otorga una gran seguridad.
¿Qué es un exchange?
Un exchange es un lugar en donde se pueden intercambiar cryptomonedas entres sí, y criptomonedas por moneda fiduciaria. Hoy en día son mucho más conocidos los exchanges que las wallet, ya que estas muchas veces ofrecen billeteras con la cuales realizan sus transacciones, pero allí no tendremos el 100% de control de nuestros fondos.
Los exchanges son muy útiles y prácticos cuando nuestro objetivo es hacer trading, (intercambiar) ya que se podrán hacer los intercambios rápidamente y tenemos conocimiento de nuestro saldo en todo momento.
Por lo tanto cuando tomemos la decisión de invertir en cryptomonedas tendremos que tener en claro que es lo que vamos a hacer con ellas, para poder elegir entre una wallet y un exchange. En ambas podremos almacenar nuestras cryptomonedas pero en verdad son muy diferentes.
¿Cúal es la diferencia entre una Wallet y un exchange?
En una billetera tenemos el control total de nuestra clave privada clave privada y esta es la única forma de acceder a nuestras cryptomonedas, por lo por lo cual son más seguras en el almacenamiento de nuestra cryptografía
Los intercambios en cambio ofrecen servicios de comercio (compra-venta de cryptomonedas)
Si bien suelen ofrecer billeteras en las cuales podemos tener acceso a nuestras claves privadas, aquí dependemos de las medidas de seguridad que adopte estas plataformas.
Por lo tanto elegiremos una billetera o una exchange según cual sea nuestro proposito.
Si nuestro objetivo es almacenar nuestras criptomonedas elegiremos una bullera ya que son de muy fácil acceso y muy seguras Además suelen tener algún sistema de respaldo para recuperar nuestras cryptomonedas para el caso en que el dispositivo llegue a fallar.
Si nuestro objetivo es el intercambio, seguramente elegiríamos un exchange por su funcionalidad y para no pagar comisiones constantemente por transferir los fondos desde la wallet hacia el exchange.
Las exchanges son simples, muy fáciles de usar pero aquí resignaremos algo de seguridad ya que no tendremos control total de nuestras claves privadas, ya que esta residirá en el exchange y como les mencioné quedaremos a la suerte de las medidas de seguridad que este decida adoptar.
Si de un día para el otro el exchange desaparece perderemos todos nuestros cryptoactivos sin posibilidades de recuperarlos, más allá de cualquier acción legal que se pueda iniciar.
En pocas palabras la compra de cryptomonedas debe ser planificada y pensada para decidir donde almacenaremos

Te hago una consulta, una duda que siempre tuve.
Qué pasa si una hot wallet deja de dar soporte? Si por ejemplo tengo mis criptomonedas en Exodus y Exodus deja de existir?
Esta consulta va de la mano con esta otra. En una plataforma como esta, steemit , la Wallet que aquí tenemos es equivalente a una hot wallet? Qué sucede si Steemit decidiera en el futuro dejar de darle acceso a la plataforma a un usuario? Este podrá no obstante seguir accediendo a los steems que tuviera hasta entonces en su Wallet? O también vería restringido su acceso a ellos?
Básicamente me pregunto, hasta qué punto la clave privada nos asegura el resguardo de nuestros criptoactivos?
Cómo podría recuperar mis criptomonedas en caso de que el soporte de la wallet en la que las tenía dejara de existir?
