THE DIARY GAME : 27 Dec 2022 - A day of fixing stuff
Finally It has arrived! After about 1 week’s wait, my parcel from China arrived just after I had my lunch. And it came at an excellent timing! Today I’m a little free and could fix two of the items that were haunting me for a little while.
- Change my curtain; and
- Replace my mountain bike’s wheel.
Just two of many on my seemingly endless list.
My existing curtain is old, torn and shredded. The threads recently jammed my standing fan and wrecked it. That provided the impetus to move replacing those drapes all the way up my todo list.
I chose a grey one, as that’s the colour that can look deceivingly clean even while it’s not. I do not like household chores. It’s obvious.
Thankful, they came with some free hooks. Some plastic hooks that could adjust the height. Interesting. Felt like I’m still stuck in 1984, where hooks were merely a bent metal strip; and they rust. But plastics might have their own set of problems. They might get brittle over time and exposure to sunlight. But that will be another problem some years down the road.
All done. Went on to get some dinner and run some errands.
Fast forward to near midnight. It’s time to settle the bike. The messier, greasier task.
The bike’s wheels are goner. Their hubs are worn and the ride gets kinky. Previous attempts to resuscitate it failed.
Several steps are needed:
- Migrating the cassette and tyre
- Installing the wheel back to the bike
- Check and adjusting the brakes and deraileurs
- Testing that all is work well
After a generous dose of grit, grime, and an hour’s worth of time. It’s done. Almost done. Discovered that one of the cog on the gear cassette might be faulty. But there’s nothing much to do for now. Will try to live with it for little while and be more mindful during my rides.
