To make the Proof of Work more efficient, researchers have proposed several adjustments to the original protocol. As far as technical limitations are concerned, it’s hard to predict when Proof of Work will become obsolete. If the coin is a commodity rather than a currency, some people argue that mining could be more sustainable in the long run. Others speculate that advances in hardware may one day render Proof of Work as we know it obsolete. For now, though, these are questions we won’t have answers to for quite some time.
