In my view, there is a gaping distance or significant difference between being surprised and being astonished. And everything you have written seems to me to be related to astonishment rather than surprise.
It's probably a lexical peculiarity, a characteristic of the German language that makes or promotes this difference.
Because surprise is always something that happens very quickly, suddenly and unexpectedly. In contrast, astonishment is something that lasts a long time, something that can grow during perception, whereas surprise diminishes over time. Furthermore, surprise is more feeling than thinking, whereas astonishment involves more thinking than feeling. Therefore, the proposition that we can decide does not apply to being surprised, but to being astonished.
That's the difference between an ordinary person like me and a learned philosopher like you 👍I get surprised easily but with your philosophical way of thinking you know the difference.
