She'd been too late.

Jemima laid on her bed as she slowly counted the ceilings, but her mind was not there. It was in chaos!
Right at the moment, her friend is in the court about to stand before the judge and receive her sentence.
It was disturbing. She'd known Aliyah and Elaine since middle school and she could have been able to say she knows them well enough. They were three close friends
This fateful day, she'd walked into old Mr Sammy's shop and found him cold dead in his own blood. What was more shocking was seeing Aliyah holding a bloodied knife and Elaine screaming ‘murder!’
This incident had put Jemima in a dilemma. Not long after, Aliyah was taken to the police station; while she denied the murder accusation, Elaine vehemently testified against her.
“Please Jemmy, you have to help me out of here!” With tears in her eyes, Aliyah had desperately begged Jemima to believe her and help her with a lawyer. The orphan could not afford to go to jail. She'd beg everytime Jemima comes to check her in the station.
But Jemima was overwhelmed with the whole situation. Aliyah claimed not to have killed the old shop owner, but the bloodied knife had her fingerprints on it and Elaine stood her ground, saying she saw Aliyah stab Mr Sammy to death. The whole evidence was glaring, but Aliyah was someone who could not even lie to save herself.
Who would she believe?
Elaine or Aliyah? But Elaine has no reason to do something bad against their third friend.
With a big exhale, Jemima picked her cell phone. ‘ What's Elaine doing now?’. She frowned as she dialed the lady's contact. And almost immediately, she picked the call.
‘Hey Jemmy!”
For a moment, Jemima was startled. Their friend is in court as a criminal now, why was Elaine sounding ecstatic??
“Elaine….”
“Oh please, don't tell me you're still sulking over that murderer you call a friend. She killed someone and she's about to get what she deserves” Elaine let out almost with a snarl, causing Jemima be speechless for a while.
“You- …. Ela-...”
“Look, talk to you later” Elaine hung up, or so she thought she did.
Thinking she actually cut the call, she actually didn't. The call was still on and from there Jemima could hear the voices of other people, like they were in a hangout. ‘What on earth was Elaine jubilating about??’ she'd angrily wanted to drop the call from her own side but her curiosity raised to the peak making her pay attention to the words being said
“Hey, is it the Jemima girl again?” One had asked
“Yeah. She's still sulking over what had happened to Aliyah” Elaine said with indifference.
“Has she been sentenced?”
“By now she should be.” a glint flashed through her eyes “thank God she's the scapegoat. I can't afford to go to jail, Ray!” She ranted to the person.
“Ha!” She continued “I stabbed Mr Sammy, you know. Thank God you guys were able to get Aliyah there, knock her out and put the knife into her hand.. I'm grateful guys”
“I could have been the one before the judge now. She's so dumb, besides what right does that orphan have to be quickly successful in her business and career? “ she bitterly let out.
Right on the other side of the call, a shocked expression was etched on Elaine's face. What had she just heard?!!
She stared down at her phone; it had the automatic feature of recording her calls and it had done just that.
She'd been moving with a snake all this while.
Frantically, she jumped off her bed with her cell phone like her life depended on it. If she's fast enough, she could still meet the hearing. She's got a huge amount of evidence. At the moment she doesn't even care if Elaine would have to be jailed now. She should pay for this.
Poor Aliyah.
Twenty minutes later, she stepped out of the cab in front of the court. Just then she saw a familiar feminine figure being led out by two jail wardens into the van.
Perhaps she felt the heavy gaze, Aliyah glanced over at Jemima with her sunken and panic stricken face.
‘She'd been sentenced’ the realization dawned on Jemima; she'd failed her friend. Too late…. She'd been too late.
She dejectedly watch the van drive off
Upvoted! Thank you for supporting witness @jswit.

Okay, don't panic. There will be a retrial because of new evidence ;-))
I would be interested to know: do you think a friendship could survive if someone really is guilty?
Do I? Well, yes. Sometimes, it could depend on why and how the unfortunate incident happened. Anything could have happened.
