I am not a vegetarian, but I understand this ethical dilemma very well. Probably unsolvable for a child...
Looks like the timing for Peter's experiences which were emotionally surcharged gave him a 1,2,3 knock-out punch. He locked himself into a vow. Childhood experiences have a strong influence for the rest of the lifetime.
