Lantau Island, located near the mouth of the Pearl River, has been important for Chinese navigation, trade and defense since prehistoric times. Some archaeological remains on the island suggest that it has been inhabited since at least the Neolithic era, although the exact type and location of the settlement has changed over the centuries.

Lantau Island (also Lantao Island, Lan Tao) is the largest island in Hong Kong, located West of Hong Kong Island and South West of the Kowloon Peninsula, and is part of the New Territories. Administratively, most of Lantau Island is part of the Islands District of Hong Kong. A small northeastern portion of the island is located in the Tsuen Wan District.

Originally an island with fishing villages, it has been developed since the late 20th century with the construction of Tung Chung New Town on its north-western coast and the completion of several major infrastructure projects, including Lantau Link (1997), Hong Kong International Airport (1998), Hong Kong Disneyland (2005) and Ngong Ping 360 (2006).

The island is known as a holiday destination because of the regular ports between Hong Kong and Lantau, especially in Silvermini Bay or Mui. Silvermin Bay Recreation Camp was established in the 1960s, it became a haven for poor children who lived in small dormitories.
