Weather is the state or changes in the atmosphere day to day and how it varies in a short-term, minutes to weeks. It is also the visible changes in the sky and air outside as regards the heat, cold, cleariness, cloudiness, wetness or dryness. For example when the weather is cloudy and dark we say it is about to rain, when the weather is bright we say it is sunny. Weather also helps us to ascertain the times and season and this affects our life in so many ways.

Weather affects our daily choice to a large extent, it determines how we stay warm or cool for comfortability, the implication is that this influences what we wear at that point in time. When the weather is sunny and hot, during this period we feel the heat as we put on light clothes to make us feel cool during the heat, it also influences us to take a trip to the beach. When the weather is bright and sunny people tend to go out more. When the weather is cold, cloudy or gloomy indicating snow or rain fall, we feel very cold and put on heavy clothing to keep warm. Their is also less going out during this period.

Weather pattern also affects the oceans. When the weather is stormy we see huge waves and this can be good for surfers. A very dry weather can result in drought and so farmers have to result to irrigation. Extreme weather can lead to flood, hurricanes, heat waves, tornadoes etc. These are very unsafe for human activities.

I like the harmattan weather, it is usually in the dry season in the month of December, during this period a very dry and cold breeze blow into my region from the Sahara desert. It is usually very dry but with cool breeze and it is usually chilly in the night. I like this weather because it is very cool and it allows you to go out freely.

Nigeria is located in the tropical region or climate, this means it is usually wet and humid. I reside in the South Eastern part of Nigeria and it is usually hot and wet most of the time during the end of the year. There are two seasons in my region, Rainy and Dry season. In my region the rainy seasons begins from April to October while the Dry Season begins from November to March, so there are only just two seasons.

What is your favorite season and why do you like it

My favorite season is the dry season, during the dry season, it is always bright and sunny, the sun is warm on your skin even though the heat can be discomforting. So I put on light clothes during this time of the year to stay cool. During the dry season I can go out freely unlike during the rainy season.

The dry season is really a good time to move around the country, it is a good time for vacationing and visiting the beach to cool off. The dry season is also a good time for planting in the field while awaiting the rainy season, also building and construction is better done in the dry season than in the rainy season. It is also a good time for harvesting crops.

The New Yam Festival is mostly celebrated in my region. This ritual is usually celebrated at the beginning of the Dry Season marking the end of the rainy season. During this ritual yam planted throughout the rainy season is harvested in the dry season, it also marks the end of the year according to traditional calender.

Their is a lot of merry making and celebration thanking Chukwu for a bountiful harvest. Various dishes are prepared with Yam are prepared such as Roasted Yam and Palm Oil, Pounded Yam and Egwusi Soup etc.

During the dry season I like to put on a light wrapper tied or wrapped around my waist and then a singlet because the weather is usually hot and clothes like this help keep me cool.

My favorite dish during the dry season is Pounded Yam and Egwusi Soup. This is a finger licking delicacy, it is just basically pounded boiled yam and Egwusi Soup which is grounded Pumpkin Seed missed with Palm Oil, Pepper, Pumpkin leaves and garnished with Chicken and Cow Skin. This food is a sure banger and perfect for the season.

In the Rainy Season I like to eat Bread Fruit or 'Ukwa' in my local delicacy. This for is eaten with corn cooked together with the bread fruit and enough palm oil. This food must be eaten hot, it helps with the chilly weather and keeps the body warm.

During the Dry Season my favorite fruit is Orange. I like Orange because it helps to deal with the dry throat and dehydration. It's succulent sweet nectar is just perfect for the weather. You can blend it and chil it in the refrigerator and serve as Orange Juice. Orange also provides us with Vitamin C which helps to protect scurvy.

While in the rainy season my favourite fruit is Pear because Pear is eaten with boiled or roasted corn. It helps with the cold and chilly weather. This fruit has to be boiled or roasted to be eating, it has this salty taste which compliments the corn. Nothing tastes better than Corn and Peer sold at the roadside. In my place we call Pear 'Ube'.

Since most people in my area are engaged in crop planting. They prefer the rainy season. The South Eastern part of Nigeria received more rain fall, this is good for farm produce cultivated during the dry season. Since most people in my region are into agriculture, the rainy season is great for them.

The rainy season also increase the level of water bodies like streams, lakes, rivers etc. This is good for fishermen in the riverside areas.

In what season does your region face more difficulties and what are these difficulties

During the rainy season, due to heavy downpour heavy flooding occurs destroying properties, roads, farmlands, houses etc. Rice banks overflow their banks this affecting people that live nearby. Erosion than can cause landslides occur frequently. This hampers socio-economic activities. People and animals become displaced or are forced to relocate.

Water bodies are contaminated and become breeding grounds for bacteria and parasites which increases the spread of diseases like cholera, malaria.

What is the special ritual associated with a particular season that people in your area have been waiting for all year

The special festival or ritual like I earlier said is the New Yam Festival which is usually celebrated during the dry season. Currently we are in the rainy season and this is a festival that people in my region are waiting for. This festival marks the end of the rainy season and the beginning of the dry season.

During this festival sacrifices are offered to the Earth goddess thanking her for a bountiful harvest. After this is fine then the big celebrations begins. Various delicacies are cooked by communities, there a lot of merry making and enjoyment.
