The Total Lunar Eclipse (GBT) phenomenon known as the Super Blood Moon will appear in the Indonesian sky on May 26, 2021, to coincide with Vesak Day in 2565. The Total Lunar Eclipse this time is very special, because it coincides with the occurrence of Perige. Perige is a phenomenon when the Moon is closest to Earth.
Quoting the official website of LAPAN, the Total Lunar Eclipse this time can also be called the Super Blood Moon, considering that its wide angle is 13.77% larger than when it was at its farthest point (Apoge).

Meanwhile, the brightness is 15.6% brighter than average or 29.1% brighter than when Apoge.

This total lunar eclipse can be witnessed if the weather conditions are cloudy and it is safe to be witnessed by the public with the naked eye, without having to use special eclipse glasses. BMKG will observe the total lunar eclipse on May 26, 2021 in locations across Indonesia using telescopes combined with detectors and information technology.
The public can follow this observation process by accessing https://www.bmkg.go.id/gbt.
Not all regions in Indonesia can witness the seconds of the total lunar eclipse from beginning to end.
There are some areas that can only see a Total Lunar Eclipse when it reaches its peak or events after it.

Phase of the Total Lunar Eclipse on Wednesday, May 26, 2021:

1. Initial Phase (P1) of the Lunar Eclipse starting at 15.46.12 WIB, 16.46.12 WITA, 17.46.12 WIT which crosses the central part of Papua so that observers in Papua Province can witness the entire process of the total lunar eclipse.
2. Phase (U1) of Partial Lunar Eclipse starting at 16.44.38 WIB, 17.44.38 WITA, 18.44.38 WIT. This phase crosses the islands of Sulawesi and Nusa Tenggara. So that observers in Eastern Indonesia, East Sulawesi Island and East Nusa Tenggara can witness this incident.
3. Phase (U2) of the Total Lunar Eclipse begins at 18.09.21 WIB, 19.09.21 WITA, 20.09.21 WIT crossing the Provinces of Riau and West Sumatra. So that all observers in Indonesia can observe the beginning of this totality phase, except in parts of Riau, West Sumatra, North Sumatra, and Aceh.
4. The peak phase of the lunar eclipse occurred at 18.18.43 WIB, 19.18.43 WITA, 20.18.43 WIT, which can be witnessed in all regions of Indonesia. Except in a small part of Riau, parts of West Sumatra, North Sumatra and Aceh.
5. Phase (U3) of the Total Lunar Eclipse ends at 18.28.05 WIB, 19.28.05 WITA, 20.28.05 WITA crossing North Sumatra.
So that observers in all regions of Indonesia, except parts of North Sumatra and Aceh, can witness this phenomenon.
6. Phase (U4) of the Partial Lunar Eclipse ends at 19.52.48 WIB, 20.52.48 WITA, 21.52.48 WIT can be witnessed throughout Indonesia.
7. Phase (P4) of the lunar eclipse ends at 20.51.14 WIB, 21.51.14 WITA, 22.51.14 WIT can be witnessed throughout Indonesia.
The entire eclipse process, from the initial phase (P1) to the final phase (P4) will last for 5 hours 5 minutes and 2 seconds.
While the total eclipse process, from the beginning of the total phase (U2), the total peak to the end of the total phase (U3) will last for 18 minutes 44 seconds.
For information, there have been four eclipses in 2021, two solar eclipses and two lunar eclipses.
Of these four celestial phenomena, only the Total Lunar Eclipse on May 26, 2021 can be observed in Indonesia.

Meanwhile, the other three eclipses cannot be seen from Indonesia.

Here are the details:

  1. Total Lunar Eclipse (GBT) on 26 May 2021 which can be observed from Indonesia

  2. The Ring Solar Eclipse (GMC) on June 10, 2021 that cannot be observed from Indonesia

  3. Partial Lunar Eclipse (GBS) on 19 November 2021 which can be observed from Indonesia

4.Total Solar Eclipse (GMT) on December 4, 2021 which cannot be observed from Indonesia

Happens to coincide with Vesak Day

The total lunar eclipse this time coincides with the seconds of Waisak, namely at 15 suklapaksa (paroterang) Waisaka 2565 Buddha Era which falls on May 26 at 18.13.30 WIB with a distance of 357,461 kilometers from Earth. Basically, Vesak seconds occur when Purnama Waisak or also called Waisaka Purnima which always falls on the 15th of Suklapaksa in the month of Waisaka.
At the time of the full moon, the Sun and Moon will be in a straight line, in such a way that the Sun's light can illuminate the Moon's surface maximally with the Earth between them. The position forming a straight line is known as the opposition (solar) or istiqbal.
So, the Sun and Moon form 180 ° angles to each other in their circulation. When the two celestial bodies form an angle of exactly 180 ° on Vesak day, it is known as "Vesak seconds". In other words, Vesak seconds are the peak of the full moon in the month of Vesaka according to the Indian calendar which is based on the circulation of the Moon.
The decision to celebrate the Trisuci is regulated in the World Fellowship of Buddhists (WFB) Conference. The total lunar eclipse that coincides with Vesak Day in the last century has occurred on May 24, 1910, May 14, 1938, May 14, 1957, May 25, 1975, and May 16, 200.This phenomenon will occur again on May 26, 2040, May 7, 2050, 6 May 2069, 17 May 2087 and 29 May 2106.
In fact, on May 16, 2023, it is one of the two Super Red Months that occurred during Vesak Day in the 21st century apart from May 26, 2021. The Super Red Month which coincides with Vesak Day, has occurred four times in the 19th century. , namely on May 10, 1808, May 21, 1826, June 1, 1844 and May 21, 1845.

This phenomenon recurs every 195 years and will occur again on May 10, 2199, May 21, 2217 and May 16, 2394.
