For me the "larvae" look more like parasites which were growing in the body of the caterpillar.

agree, this version is more plausible.

btw -- recently I met a spider with a lot of tiny orange 'fruit bodies' - my 1st assumption was it was carrying his eggs, but when I asked questions, it turned out they are parasites eating him. nature is a struggle, not only a symbiosis, hehe
