On November 5th, 1605, a significant event in British history known as the Gunpowder Plot took place. The plot was an attempt by a group of English Catholics to assassinate King James I of England and his government by blowing up the House of Lords during the State Opening of Parliament. The conspirators aimed to restore Catholicism as the dominant religion in England.

The Gunpowder Plot was led by Robert Catesby, a devout Catholic who was frustrated with the persecution of Catholics under King James I's rule. Catesby recruited several individuals, including Guy Fawkes, Thomas Percy, John Wright, and Thomas Wintour, among others, to carry out the plan.

The plotters rented a cellar beneath the House of Lords and began stockpiling gunpowder in preparation for their attack. They managed to accumulate around 36 barrels of gunpowder, intending to ignite it during the opening ceremony when the king and other prominent figures would be present.

However, an anonymous letter warning against attending Parliament was sent to Lord Monteagle, a Catholic nobleman sympathetic to the conspirators' cause. The letter raised suspicions, and Monteagle promptly informed the authorities. As a result, a search was conducted on the night of November 4th, leading to the discovery of Guy Fawkes guarding the barrels of gunpowder.

Fawkes was arrested and taken into custody. Under interrogation, he revealed details about the plot and his fellow conspirators. Over the following days, many of them were captured or killed while attempting to flee.
