On the 6th March 1957, modern Ghana, a former British colony known as the Gold Coast, made history when it ceased to remain under the British flag.

It became the first colony in what was called 'black Africa ' to become completely independent to European rules. Ghana's example served as a torch which swiftly fired many other African countries.

By 1960, 18 more European colonies in Africa had become sovereign nations. This number included Guinea which became independent in 1958 and Nigeria which became independent in October 1960.

During a tour of Africa in 1960, Harold Macmillan, then the prime minister of Great Britain, described this national consciousness, or feeling, which he noticed all over Africa as a strong 'wind of change '.

This description was, indeed, accurate, for the demand for independence swept across the whole continent of Africa like a gale.

We may ask the question, 'What brought about this great changes?' It came as a result of many forces which had been at work for some time. Here we can describe only a few.
