3,700-year-old Babylonian tablet rewrites the history of maths - and shows the Greeks did not develop trigonometry

in #history7 years ago

A 3,700-year-old clay tablet has proven that the Babylonians developed trigonometry 1,500 years before the Greeks and were using a sophisticated method of mathematics which could change how we calculate today.

The tablet, known as Plimpton 332, was discovered in the early 1900s in Southern Iraq by the American archaeologist and diplomat Edgar Banks, who was the inspiration for Indiana Jones.

The true meaning of the tablet has eluded experts until now but new research by the University of New South Wales, Australia, has shown it is the world’s oldest and most accurate trigonometric table, which was probably used by ancient architects to construct temples, palaces and canals.

I thought I would share an article with everyone because it makes you wonder what humans were like thousands of years before the earliest records of civilization. This article is just more evidence to me that humans have gone through multiple dark ages where technology was lost over the centuries and we are just beginning to discover how old these monuments and clay tablets actually are.

I tend to believe a lot of what you see on the Discovery channel show Ancient Aliens because some of the modern theories on ancient civilization just don't make any sense. For example, the ancient ruins in South America are supposedly made by natives that didn't even have the invention of the wheel but we are suppose to believe that they stacked 50 to 100 ton blocks and carved more advanced designs out of these blocks than what we could produce today. Doesn't pass the smell test for me and they don't even really don't know how old these ruins are, they could be 10,000 or 20,000 years old for all we know.

I think everything invented today was probably invented before on this planet but the knowledge was lost thousands and thousands of years ago. We have very little knowledge of what humans were doing 5,000 or 10,000 years ago but we have clues in ancient writing like the garden of eden in the bible and the lost city of atlantis from the greeks. These are probably the same place just different accounts of the legend from different people. These places probably existed before or during the last ice age and might of been more advanced than today and probably destroyed by Humans or some kind of solar flare or earth change. The great flood?

Again, interesting read and makes you wonder what else is out there that we have yet to find about our ancient ancestors.

Pictures of the ruins in Peru.

Where the island of Atlantis might of been 10 or 20,000 years ago.

Hi @wakeupnd I used to be so interested in Sumer and Sumerian Cuneiform tablet and writing. Your post here regarding the 3700 year old Babylonian tablet (regarding math and trigonometry) has brought me back! My interest is now renewed!

Glad I could help.

Thanks for sharing , really appreciate it !!! Bless !!!!

I've been doing a series myths and legends and the Sumerian's are next. They were incredibly advanced, way more so than western academia will ever admit.
Nice post mate.

Charles Kos on youtube would love this. He makes some great videos. History of many ages has definitely been lost. I wonder how far back it actually goes.

this is amazing!, i belive in atlantins and the super acient civilization.

Tomorrow's Headline:
Trump says he invented trigonometry!

It puts me in mind as to the 'why' of the looting of the Baghdad museum. War is often used to hide great truths.
