On this day, November 6, 1860 in the United States of America, was elected the first president of the Republican Party, Abraham Lincoln. At that time, there were huge differences in the United States between the Northern and Southern states and territories, and within the country itself, relations between the two main parties, which nominate candidates for the presidency, became more tense.
As a compromise from the Republican Party, a person was nominated as a candidate who proved to be among Americans as a hardworking, honest and socially stable person. This man was Abraham Lincoln, a native of the common people, a man who “made himself.”
For the first time in US history, voter turnout exceeded 80% of the population. The Democratic Party experienced difficulties and a split before the elections for that period. It was thanks to the only candidacy from the Republicans and the full support of the Northern states that Abraham Lincoln won a full victory in the presidential elections.
Lincoln was opposed to slavery in the United States and his election victory further divided the people and society in the United States. It was then that all this contributed to the beginning of the US Civil War between the North and the South of 1861-1865.
On the one hand, the Union of 20 states without slave and 4 border states of the North took part in hostilities, on the other hand, the Union of 11 slave states of the South participated.
The consequence of the war was the death of Abraham Lincoln in 1865. Lincoln was mortally wounded in the assassination attempt and died without regaining consciousness.
