The Orient-Express - Part 2
The Belgian businessman Georges Nagelmackers achieved a political masterpiece with this project. It concludes contracts with nine railway companies from today five European countries: France, Germany, Austria, Hungary and Romania. For example, the Orient Express combines countries with very different political interests - over a distance of more than 3000 kilometers. The Orient Express is a fast, inter-European transport connection.
And the train writes history. After all, one can travel with him to the Orient - at the end of the 19th, beginning of the 20th century, a mysterious goal, surrounded by myths and stories. Writers, actors, musicians and filmmakers are fascinated, the luxury train inspires the imagination.
Agatha Christie writes a famous crime scene "Murder in the Orient Express" after a journey, Graham Greene inspires the train to his novel "Stamboul Train". And James Bond chases the villain in the Orient Express in "From Russia with Love". With such famous passengers as Mata Hari, Leon Trotsky and Greta Garbo, the extravagant train makes headlines.
Because the Orient Express crosses different countries, it is again and again the polemic of politics. After the First World War the route of the train is divided. The original route is blocked for civilian traffic, it is reserved exclusively for high-ranking military and politicians.
For normal travelers, the "Simplon-Orient-Express" is launched in 1919, which leads to Istanbul via Switzerland, Northern Italy and Croatia. In this way the losing countries Germany and Austria are crossed over in the course of the route. After the Second World War the legendary train loses in importance. Ordinary express trains replace the historic cars.
Moreover, even a luxury train is no longer up to the competition of the automobile and the aircraft. From the normal timetable offer more and more sections are deleted. But at the end of the 1970s a renaissance of the Orient Express began.
Various operating companies revive the "king of the trains" by providing special tourist trips. Today, railway fans can enjoy the ride in one of the historic Orient express trains on parts of the original route, and watch the landscape at a gourmet menu.
