Interesting Facts #2 - Amelia Earhart's Disappearance.
Welcome back everyone to another entry of Interesting Facts. Today we're going to talk about a Amelia Earhart the first woman who tried to fly around the world, and her mysterious disappearance. Let's get started!
Early Life.
Amelia Earhart was born on July 24, 1897 in Atchison, Kansas. Since she was a child, Amelia had a sense for adventure. She would spent hours upon hours playing with her sister Pidge, doing all kind of activities like hunting rats with a rifle, climbing trees etc. She also had a collection of worms, tree toads, moths and katydids. In her early days she was home-schooled by her sister and her mother. She also liked to read a lot where she would spend hours in her family's library.
Her love for flying came when she visited an air fair in Toronto. On December 28, 1920, Amelia and her father visited an airfield where Frank Hawks gave her a ride. She was instantly hooked. After working all kind of jobs to save up money for her flying lessons, she finally started her lessons on January 3, 1921.
On June 17, 1928. She took part in the Transatlantic flight with pilot Wilmer Stultz. Thought she didn't fly, she was only a passenger. But she also had the duty of keeping the flight log. They landed in Pwll near Burry Port. The flight took 20 hours and 40 minutes. When they returned to the United States, they were greeted a ticker-tape parade, and a reception with President Coolidge at the White House.
Her First Attempt of a World Flight
Her first attempt of flying around the world was in 1937. Where her crew took off from Oakland, California to Honolulu. The Crew consisted of Amelia, Noonan, Harry Manning and Mantz. Their plane had a failure, so they landed in Hawaii. But they somehow ended up on Ford Island in Pearl Harbor. After the three days of fixing the plane they continued their flight. But before taking off, Amelia ground-looped. It's still not clear what actually happened, but some sources say they saw a tire blow. But anyways the flight was cancelled and they returned home, planning their second attempt.
The Second Attempt
After her failed first attempt, She and her husband gathered additional funds for a second attempt. This time her crew consisted of only Fred Noonan. They departed on June 1 and after many stops in South America, Africa and Southeast Asia, She arrived at Lae, New Guniea on June 29, 1937. The journey was almost completed, only 7000 Miles (11,000 KM) remained.
Her Disappearance
She took off from Lae Airfield on July 2, 1937. Their destination was Howland Island. After a lot of radio misunderstanding, the final approach to Howland Island failed. Their Last know position was near Nukumanu Islands, about 800 Miles (1,300 KM) into the flight.
There are many theories of what happened, some sound reasonable like, she ran out of fuel and crashed. To, her flight was a scheme to spy on the Japanese. If you want to read these theories i will link an Article from the History channel at the credits.
