Picture: Bran Castle – Home of the bloodthirsty Vlad Dracula
Near the city of Brașov, there is a castle overlooking the mountain pass between Transylvania and Wallachia.
Build in the 14th century, the castle served as a customs post. Later it was overtaken by the Hungarian rulers until it ended in the hands of Dominic von Habsburg, who opened the castle to the public.
The castle is mainly known as it is often referred to as the home of Vlad Dracula, aka Vlad the Impaler, on which Bram Stoker based his famous literary work Dracula. This is however entirely fictional, as the Wallachian ruler Vlad Țepeș, or Vlad the Impaler probably did go through the pass multiple times, but that is as far as his connection with the castle goes.
