5 - Weird Days
Alaska is cold and dark, but not all the time. The lowest recorded all-time low was -80 degrees in 1971 with an all-time high was 100 degrees in 1915.
At the top of the world, Barrow Alaska, the night can be 67 days long in the winter and day can be 82 days long in the summer. One town even has two sunsets in one day at the end of summer.

4 - All Roads Lead to Nowhere
Alaska’s capital city, Juneau, is the only state capital not accessible by roads. You can only take the ferry or fly to the city. This is a common problem in Alaska and there’s even a pizza restaurant that delivers by plane.

3 - Japan Invades
Pearl Harbor was famously bombed by the Imperial Japanese Navy On December 7th, 1941, but most people don’t know that the Aleutian Islands of Alaska were also attacked and invaded by Japanese forces on June 3rd, 1942. The allies took it back over a year later.

2 - State Flag
The Alaskan State flag has a dark blue background with a constellation the Big Dipper displayed in classic yellow stars with the North Star represented in the upper right corner. It was designed by 13-year-old Benny Benson in 1927 when he won the statewide contest.

1 - Second to Last
Delaware was the first state to join the United States in 1787. New states joined consistently until 1912 with Arizona. It would take almost 47 years for Alaska to join itself in 1959. But the last lucky state joined the country 7 months later is the possibly the exact opposite of Alaska. The beautiful island chain of... Hawai’i.
