Today in history: Eris was discovered

in #history8 years ago

Hello Steemians!

Welcome to today's episode of the "Today in History" serial, where I bring you daily historical facts and events of the current date.

Today is the day that Eris was discovered in 2005!

Eris a dwarf planet, the second largest one in our Solar System.
Despite it being the 2nd largest dwarf planet it is more massive, about 27%, then the largest one, Pluto.

It was discovered by Michael E. Brown and his team in Palomar Observatory.

Eris had one known moon, Dysnomia.

Eris orbits the sun every 558 years.
the latest estimate of it's diameter is 2,326 km.

It is believed that the surface is very similar to the one of Pluto, with methane ice on it.
The temperatures on Eris range from −243.2°C to −217.2 °C.

A very cold place discovered not so long ago. There still aren't many pictures of Eris, I personally am looking forward to seeing some as our technologies develop and push the boundaries.
I hope you enjoyed this episode of my serial, till next time, stay tuned for more!
