কারণ এই ইতিহাস নিয়ে কারো লিখার
দরকার হয়নি। যেহেতু এখানে হিন্দুদের
ক্ষয়ক্ষতি বেশি হয়েছে তাই তারাই
এটা নিয়ে গবেষণা করেছে। দাঙ্গার
কিছুদিন পরেই নোয়াখালী পাকিস্তানের
অন্তর্গত হওয়ায় মুসলিমরা এই অঞ্চলে
জয়ী হয়ে যান।

নোয়াখালীতে দাঙ্গার সূত্রপাত
নোয়াখালীতে নয়। মুসলিম লীগের
নেতৃত্বে মুসলিমরা পাকিস্তান দাবী
করেছে আর অন্যদিকে কংগ্রেসের
নেতৃত্বে হিন্দুরা একক ভারতের জন্য
দাবী জানাচ্ছে। এই নিয়ে হিন্দু মুসলিম
দাঙ্গা লেগেছে কলকাতায়। তারই
সূত্র ধরে বিহারে শুরু হয়। কলকাতায়
হিন্দু-মুসলিম সমান সমান ছিলো
বলে পরিস্থিতি অতটা নাজুক হয়ে
পড়ে নি। তবে বিহারে মুসলিমদের
অবস্থা হচ্ছিলো অত্যন্ত করুণ।

এখন যেভাবে আরাকান থেকে
রোহিঙ্গাদের ঢল নেমেছে। সেসময়
বিহার হতে নোয়াখালীতে ঢল
নেমেছিলো। নোয়াখালী যদিও
একেবারে মুসলিম অধ্যুষিত ছিল না,
তবে নানান কারণে নোয়াখালীতে
বিহারীরা এসেছিলো। এর অন্যতম
কারণ নোয়াখালীর মুসলিমরা অন্য
মুসলিমদের মতো অসচেতন ছিল না।
তারা ছিলেন রাজনৈতিকভাবে
অত্যন্ত সচেতন। এর কারণ এখানে
ওহাবী আন্দোলন এবং হাজী
শরীয়ত উল্লাহর ফরায়েজী আন্দোলন
অত্যন্ত শক্তিশালী ছিল।

বিহারীরা নোয়াখালীতে আসার
আরেকটি কারণ ছিল গোলাম
সরোয়ার হুসেইনী। তাঁর বাড়ি বর্তমান
লক্ষ্মীপুর জেলার রামগঞ্জ থানার শামপুরে।
তিনি ছিলেন পীর পরিবারের।
তারা বংশানুক্রমিকভাবে মুসলিমদের
নেতৃত্ব দিয়ে আসছেন।
তিনি নির্যাতিত বিহারীদের
নোয়াখালীতে আহ্বান জানিয়েছেন।
এই লক্ষ্যে তাদের নিরাপত্তা ও
আবাসনের ব্যবস্থা করার জন্য একটি
বাহিনী তৈরি করেন। এটি মিয়ার
ফৌজ নামে পরিচিত ছিল।

গোলাম সরোয়ার হুসেইনী রাজনৈতিক
লোক ছিলেন। তিনি ১৯৩৭ সালের
নির্বাচনে কৃষক প্রজা পার্টির নমিনেশন
নিয়ে বঙ্গীয় আইন পরিষদের নির্বাচিত
সদস্য হন। ১৯৪৬ সালের নির্বাচনে
তিনি মুসলিম লীগের প্রার্থীর কাছে পরাজিত হন।

যাই হোক গোলাম সরোয়ার সাহেব
বিহারীদের আশ্রয় দিচ্ছিলেন পাশাপাশি
বিহারে ও কলকাতায় দাঙ্গা বন্ধ করার জন্য রাজনৈতিক প্রচেষ্টা চালাতে থাকেন।
কিন্তু তার সেই প্রচেষ্টায় সাড়া দেয়নি
কংগ্রেস এবং মুসলিম লীগ। তিনি সবার
কাছে চিঠি লিখেন এবং নির্বিচারে মানুষ
হত্যার সমাধান চান। কেউ সমাধানে
জোরালো ভূমিকা রাখেন নি।
তিনি খুবই হতাশ হয়েছিলেন।

এদিকে রায়পুরের হিন্দু জমিদার
চিত্তরঞ্জন রায় চৌধুরী নোয়াখালীতে
বিহারীদের এই অনুপ্রবেশ পছন্দ
করছিলেন না। তিনি বিহারীসহ
মুসলিমদের আগমন ঠেকানোর
প্রস্তুতি নিয়েছিলেন। চিত্তরঞ্জন রায়
চৌধুরীর এই আচরণ সরোয়ার
সাহেবকে ব্যাথিত করেছিলো।
তিনি তাকে বুঝানোর চেষ্টা করেন।
কিন্তু জমিদার তা মানতে নারাজ।
জমিদার কংগ্রেসের সাথে যুক্ত ছিলেন।
সরোয়ার সাহেব তাই গান্ধীকে খবর
জানালেন যাতে তিনি জমিদারকে
তার নিষ্ঠুর আচরণ থেকে বিরত রাখেন।
গান্ধী তার আহ্বানকে পাত্তা দিলেন না।
এদিকে জমিদার নোয়াখালী থেকে
সকল বহিরাগত মুসলিমকে উচ্ছেদের
অভিযানে নেমেছেন।

সরোয়ার হুসেইনী কারো থেকে কোন
সাহায্য না পেয়ে অবশেষে তিনি তার
আস্তানা সামপুরের দিয়ারা শরীফে
তার ভক্তদের ও মুসলিমদের এক
সমাবেশ ডাকলেন। সেখানে তিনি
মুসলিমদের বর্তমান অবস্থা সম্পর্কে
জানিয়েছেন এবং চিত্তরঞ্জনের রায়
চৌধুরীর বিরুদ্ধে লড়াই করার জন্য
আহ্বান জানান।

সকল মুসলিম তার আহবানে সাড়া দেয়।
চিত্তরঞ্জনকে অবরোধ করে মুসলিমরা।
সে বৃটিশ পুলিশ, আগ্নেয়াস্ত্র, তার পেয়াদা
বাহিনী, হিন্দু জঙ্গী, কংগ্রেস কর্মী ও
জলকামান দিয়েও সেদিন মুসলিমদের
আটকাতে পারেনি। অবশেষে সে তার
পরিবারের সদস্যদের হত্যা করে এবং
নিজে আত্মহত্যা করে। সরোয়ার সাহেবের
এই অভিযানে তাঁকে সহায়তা করেন
জনৈক মুসলিম লীগ নেতা কাশেম।
সরোয়ার সাহেবের বাহিনীর নাম মিয়ার
ফৌজ আর কাশেমের বাহিনীর নাম ছিল
কাশেম ফৌজ।

জমিদারের পতনের পর তারা পুরো
নোয়াখালীতে কয়েকটিভাগে ভাগ হয়ে
হিন্দু উচ্ছেদে নেমে পড়েন। এক সপ্তাহের
মধ্যে ঘটনা প্রবাহ পাল্টে যায়।
এবার হিন্দু শরনার্থীদের ঢল শুরু হয়
নোয়াখালী থেকে। এতক্ষণে টনক নড়ে
মোহনদাস করমচাঁদ গান্ধীর। তিনি মুসলিম
নেতাদের সাথে যোগাযোগ শুরু করেন
সরোয়ার হুসেইনীকে থামানোর জন্য।
কিন্তু কোন মুসলিম নেতার কথা এমনকি
তার দলের প্রধান বরিশালের এ কে ফজলুল
হকের কথাও শুনেন নি সরোয়ার সাহেব।
কারণ এতদিন কেউ তাকে কোন সহায়তা করেনি।

অবশেষে তাকে থামানোর জন্য গান্ধী নিজেই এসেছিলেন নোয়াখালীতে। নোয়াখালীর
চৌমুহনীতে কংগ্রেসের উদ্যোগে সমাবেশে
বক্তব্য রাখেন। ইতিমধ্যে সরোয়ার হুসেইনী
ঘোষণা দিয়েছেন তিনি পুরো বাঙলা থেকে
হিন্দুদের উচ্ছেদ করবেন। গান্ধী এসে সরোয়ার সাহেবের সাথে সেখা করতে চাইলে প্রথমে তিনি অস্বীকৃতি জানান। পরে রাজি হন।

গান্ধী যেখানেই যান সেখানেই তিনি একটি ছাগল নিয়ে যান। তিনি সেই ছাগলের দুধ পান করেন। সরোয়ার সাহেবের আস্তানায় প্রবেশ করা মাত্রই তার ছাগল হস্তগত করেন মিয়া ফৌজের লোকেরা। যখন সারোয়ার সাহেবের সাথে তার কথা হচ্ছিলো তখনই রান্না করা ছাগল উপস্থাপন করা হয় গান্ধীর সামনে। এটা ছিল সরোয়ার সাহেবের একটি থ্রেট। গান্ধী #সরোয়ার সাহেবের এই আচরণেই আন্দাজ করতে সক্ষম হয় #নোয়াখাইল্লারা কী জিনিস!

সরোয়ার সাহেব গান্ধীকে বলেন, আপনি ভুল স্থানে এসেছেন। দাঙ্গার সূত্রপাত এখানে নয়। আপনাকে ব্যবস্থা নিতে অনুরোধ করেছি বিহারে ও কলকাতায়। আপনি এসেছেন নোয়াখালীতে। যেদিন কলকাতায় ও বিহারে সংঘর্ষ বন্ধ হবে সেদিন নোয়াখালী ঠান্ডা হয়ে যাবে। গান্ধী অনুরোধ করেছেন তিনি চেষ্টা চালাবেন এই সময়ের মধ্যে নোয়াখালীতে যাতে হিন্দু উচ্ছেদ বন্ধ থাকে। সরোয়ার সাহেব বলেছেন আপনি কি আমাকে এই নিশ্চয়তা দিবেন আমি বন্ধ করার সাথে সাথে বিহারে ও কলাকাতায় বন্ধ হবে?

গান্ধী নিশ্চয়তা দিতে ব্যর্থ হয়েছিল। সরোয়ার হুসেইনী বললেন তাহলে আমাকে আপনি কোন অনুরোধ করার যোগ্যতা রাখেন না। আমি আপনার নিরাপত্তা দিতেও প্রস্তুত নই। আমি আপনাকে নোয়াখালীতে আহ্বান করিনি। সরোয়ার সাহেবের হুমকিতে গান্ধী কাজ শুরু করলেন। তিনদিনের মধ্যে পুরো ভারতে দাঙ্গা বন্ধ হলো। একথা সরোয়ার সাহেবের কাছে স্পষ্ট ছিলো গান্ধীর হাতেই সকল চাবিকাঠি। সেই সকল দাঙ্গা লাগাচ্ছে এবং মুসলিমদের হত্যা করছে।

দাঙ্গা বন্ধ হলে গান্ধী নোয়াখালীতে তার নিরাপত্তা চাইলেন এবং হিন্দুদের কল্যাণে আশ্রম করার অনুমতি চাইলেন। সরোয়ার সাহেব তার নিরাপত্তার ব্যবস্থা করলেন এবং নোয়াখালীর সোনাইমুড়িতে হিন্দু আশ্রম করার অনুমতি দেন। সেখানের হিন্দু নেতা হেমন্তের জায়গায় আশ্রম স্থাপিত হয়।
