September 4
On September 4, 1983 Greg LeMond won the Men’s Road Race of the Union Cycliste Internationale Road World Championships. This was his first major victory and paved the way to winning the Tour de France 3 years later. He is the only American to win the Tour de France, as Armstrong and Landis were both stripped of their victories. Greg is clearly the greatest American cyclist of all time.
I turned 12 in 1983. It was a rough year. I was struggling with discipline issues in school due, in part, to a horrible relationship with my step-mother. All I wanted to do was escape and I did into cycling. When I was on the bike was the only time I felt confident and the stress just melted away. I dreamed of riding with Greg LeMond. That dream has not come true. Yet.
