Have you traced your family tree?
I have been working on my family tree for quite a while.
This is just the section with photos. I have gone back to 1647 on the male line and 1645 on my mothers side.
The family did not move much and is still within 10 miles of the earliest records. A few people came into the family from distant places in England but this is easily explained due to the increase in coal mining in the early nineteenth century.
I also found out we were poor.
The reason for starting this? My wife's great grandmother had the same maiden name we have now. I wanted to know if we were related in any distant way. I found although I was born in the same village we were not related.
Tracing your family tree is great fun but hard work. You will need some idea of your family as records only really exist in the U.K. Between 1841 and 1911. Once you have these sorted you can then go back further using more local records.
Very interesting. I do genealogy as a hobby. We also should start a tag(s) for people searching . Good Luck in your search! Upvote!
Hi @thedeplorable1 I have done another post if you are interested
How far have you got and are you in the uk?
On my moms side yes. My Dad side... I am stuck in 1755 in Pennsylvania. Fun! Fun! Fun! lol
The stuck bit makes it interesting. I got stuck for ages in 1844 when my 3 x great grandmother had her child out of wedlock and then left him with relatives. All sorted ok but took a while.
yes, Its those kinda situations that make it much more difficult! We should continue to post about genealogy. I think there is a community here for it.
I will do
I think that's fascinating! My eldest sister is working on tracing our family back to its English and Welsh roots; I believe she has gone back to the early-mid 1700s so far. I'm intrigued to see what she has 'dug up', lol.
I loved doing it and once you get the hang of it the process gets easier. I have done a few others now.

Hi @s0u1
I see your wife's surname is Gent. My mother's maiden name is Van Gent. They came to South-Africa from the Netherlands, just after WWII. Do you think there is a relationship between Gent and Van Gent? Here in South Africa there are almost no people with the 2 above mentioned surnames. As far as I have it Gent is a town in Belgium.
I think although records don't exist that I know off The Gent name originated from Ghent and I would expect we came from that area. We could off cause just have got the name from being High born A Gent but I have no way of telling. The DNA tests they do on Ancestry might show my origin but I am not sure how good they are.
