Bireuen, is a city dubbed the city of struggle. Bireuen was magnificent and well known during the Dutch aggression (1947-1948) in defending the Republic of Indonesia from invaders.

President Soekarno's first arrival to Bireuen is indeed phenomenal. in 1948 the Dutch launched their second aggression against Yogyakarta. In a moment the second capital of the Republic of Indonesia fell and occupied by the Dutch.

Bireuen became the 3rd RI capital after yogyakarta. Soekarno got from yogyakarta to bireuen on 18 juni 1948, for a week bireuen which in juluki juang city became soekarno territory controlled republic indonesia for a week, at that time indonesia in emergency situation.

For a week later, President Sukarno ran the government wheel from Bireuen. He stayed and controlled the Indonesian government at the residence of Colonel Hussein Joesoef, Commander of the X Division of Sumatra Command, Langkat and Tanah Karo, at the Office of the X Division (Pendopo Bupati Bireuen now).

The selection of Bireuen as a place of government is not only because this area is among the safest, because Bireuen is the military center of Aceh. Its location is very strategic in arranging military strategy to blockade the Dutch attack in Medan Area which has mastered East Sumatra, it is bireuen which may now be a forgotten city by RI.
