Israeli F-16I Sufa hit by Syrian Air Defenses after raid
Syrian Air Defenses seem to be responsible for the loss of one F-16I Sufa after the F-16 conducted raids on a Syrian Air Force base.
Israeli aircraft have been able to operate essentially unscratched over Syria.
The advanced nature of the F-16I avionics, decoys and standoff capability is no small part in the Israelis ability to strike and bring their pilots home.
With the loss of the F-16I and the damage to an F-15I on the same mission it's forcing analyst to assess Syrian Air Defense capabilities and possible recent improvements by Russian forces. While most doubt direct involvement by Russian forces within the specific SAM batteries, the fact remains it is possible technical and training transfers have increased the effectiveness of Syrian defenses.
It is believed the SA-5 (S-200) and Buk missiles engaged the F-16 and F-15.
