Police managed to find evidence in the form of a number of food items previously reported missing in exact amounts. Both were sentenced to prison and sent to England. There, Joseph and William served four years in jail at different facilities. Afterwards, they are returned to Australia and serve the remainder of the sentence in the Kangaroo Country where the two originated. In 1852, both were placed in two different prisons. William Cross whose real name is John Williams, imprisoned in Hobart and Joseph Bolitho Johns stationed in Fremantle. Moondyne Joe was granted clemency and released for being well behaved while behind bars.
