Ethan Allen
Ethan Allen (January 21, 1738-February 12, 1789) was born in Litchfield, Connecticut and is best known as the Founder of the State of Vermont.
On May 10, 1775 during the Revolutionary War, Allen and the Green Mountain Boys along with Colonel Benedict Arnold's forces captured Fort Ticonderoga.
On September 25, 1775, while invading British-held Montreal, Allen was captured and held prisoner for two years before being exchanged.
Allen returned to Vermont, which had declared independence in 1777, and was made major general in the Vermont militia. Allen's petition to the Continental Congress for Vermont's admission was denied. The state was not admitted into the Union until 1791 two years after Allen died.
