Butch and Sundance Get Blamed For A Brazen Robbery, In Argentina!
Howdy folks and greetings from the Great Plains of North Texas!
We're in the middle of a series about two of America's most famous and successful outlaws, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. In case you haven't been following the series, the boys have moved to Argentina in South America to start their lives over and to avoid capture in the U.S.
Their plans to build a ranch and cattle, sheep and horse operation were very successful and they were working hard. Not only on the ranch but also working to fit into the local community.
They had earned the respect and friendship of the local community, even the local Sheriff. Or maybe I should say ESPECIALLY the local sheriff who, like several local men, was said to be infatuated with the lovely Etta Place.
I need to put her picture on here once again for those who haven't been following the series. This is the only known photo of her.. here she is with Sundance:
Nice mustache on Sundance.
Sundance and Etta actually took another trip back to the United States late in 1903. I'm not sure what they were doing here but they spent time in Fort Worth, historians think that she had family there as Sundance had referred to her as being a Texas girl.
I knew there was something special about her! lol. No wonder she could ride and shoot so well!
Anyway, then they went to the World's Fair in Saint Louis. Sundance sent an unsigned postcard to his sister in Pennsylvania which of course the Pinkertons had intercepted.
Hindsight is 20/20 but man...
In fact, Sundance and his sister had been writing letters back and forth, ALL of which the Pinkertons had intercepted. So the Pinkertons knew where they were. Not smart on Sundance's part.
These guys were smart and savvy but they must not have thought they were in danger of being picked up way down there. The trip for Etta and Sundance lasted for several months and then they headed back for the ranch.
Apparently, although the Pinkertons had wanted posters and alerts at all the ports of entry they were able to get in and out without being noticed. No computer data bases back then!
Banditos Americanos?
Another year has passed, it is now the year 1905. At the southern tip of Argentina in a town called Rio Gallegos a couple of American cowboys showed up. They rented a house outside of town, most reports say that they had a lady living with them.
They made it known that they were definitely American and were reps for a big livestock company and were looking for land to purchase. They made themselves very well known around town. One way they did this was to ride their horses at top speed up and down main street when they came in to buy supplies.
Damn Yankees!
This of course attracted alot of attention and the locals would call them "those crazy Yankees." They also dined in town and left generous tips and were very friendly. All well and good right? Not bad representatives of Americans. Very likeable.
But one day they walked into the local bank at closing time with their six shooters drawn and demanded all the money. They got $100,000 worth of cash and silver in a bag and ran out, jumped on their horses and disappeared.
I don't even know if a posse was assembled or if they had the horses for a posse but it was an extremely successful robbery. And way too easy.
Getting the calculator out..
Ok guys, that 100 grand back in 1905 would be almost 3 million dollars today! So it was a breath-takingly successful haul. And, it looked like a classic Butch and Sundance operation...it was a vintage Butch design.
The problem is, Butch, Sundance and Etta were hard at work on their ranch at the time and no where near Rio Gallegos. Not to mention that the bank robbers were way too young at about 25 and 30 years old. Butch and Sundance were 40 years old at the time.
A rather brilliant deception
But the way the job was set up and when the police chief in Buenos Aires found out about it, staring at the wanted poster on his wall for Butch and Sundance that the Pinkertons had distributed...well he thought he knew who done it.
By the way, one of the special agents that the Pinkertons had assigned to the Wild Bunch case had tracked Butch, Sundance and Etta to Buenos Aires and had even gone there and talked to the American Consul who had recommended the Patagonia area to them. So they already knew the general area where they were.
The police chief ordered the local Sheriff, who was good friends with the three, (especially Etta)to arrest them immediately for the bank robbery at Rio Gallegos.
This guy is secretly in love with Etta, will he actually arrest them?
Their story continues in the next post.
Thanks for reading folks, God bless you all!

PS- ya know...you might just be a redneck if:
Your idea of "Web-TV" is the spiders hanging off the rabbit ears!
Talk about a setup. I don't know the story and wont cheat and look it up either. Sounds like the Pinkerton gang scored $100 000 and got their man arrested.Just a guess mind you and will wait for tomorrow.
Haha! brilliant reasoning sir cryptoandcoffee! I don't think they ever caught the real thieves which gives me reason to think you are right!
Don't you wonder what was up with law enforcement that they so often depended on supposition instead of facts? It's interesting that Sundance and Etta return to the US rather frequently but Butch has never returned
Howdy today Melinda! yes it was very interesting about Butch but he probably would just want to visit his parents, especially his mother Annie, but knew he couldn't do it without great risk. Sundance and Etta both visited family each time so I guess that was a motivating factor for travel.
Law enforcement sure jumped to that conclusion but since it was still in the same general area I can see why. Those guys basically impersonating them did a really good job of it though! pretty smart.
I'm glad they got to go to the World's Fair! How is your day going?
Hey Melinda..it is going very well. We took off today to go to Target which is in another city about 25 minutes away because Mrs. J's old phone wasn't working on our new plan. well, new company, we switched to Consumer Cellular from Verizon. Verizon is great but it was costing a hundred dollars a month for almost nothing, we don't use the phones much. Consumer Cellular is about $45 or $48 something like that.
We just had to switch the Sim cards but she had an old Blackberry and it wasn't working. The newer phone was, so we got her a new phone today. I didn't know they still made Polaroid cameras! I was looking at them today. $129. I was shocked to see them. By now they're so different they're probably popular again.
Oh and we were looking at the tv's while the guy switched information in the phones and set the new one up. Oh my gosh those are fabulous! So I thought of you and your new one! I can see how the technology has advanced. wow.
I love my TV! Matter of fact I have plans to get off here for a couple hours and go watch something... As yet to be determined.
My granddaughter got a Polaroid camera for Christmas and I was surprised to see it, too. The kids had no idea that cameras could even do that!
Did you get tipu set up? Have you tried it yet?
haha! that camera is amazing these young people, they think it's high tech! lol..I don't know how long it's been around but a long time! No I haven't sent any steem to tipu yet but I will, it's a great idea to have that set up with some funds in it. we're going to watch a movie tonight too, I haven't been on steemit much today but that's okay, numbers should still be pretty good.
I think mine should be OK this week, too! We will soon find out! I remember Polaroids back when I was a kid in the 60s and you had to peel the photo paper apart and rub the photo with a sponge thing that had a stabilizing chemical on it. Right? The pictures were not great, but they were instant!
This is the comment that got attacked. I'm going to watch TV. Wishing you luck here tonight!
oh and yes, your numbers are always better than you think, when you doubt that you will be in the top ten you are in the top five so I'm saying top three for you this week I bet!
Oh wow I don't remember having to rub the photo, I must have just seen the later models. What is the comment that got attacked?
Well damn. Pass the popcorn! That was a bot war flag! I go look to see if I said anything important!
Really? There is a popped corn bot?
I have seen the popcorn bot show up sometimes! lol.

howdy steem-plus and thank you for the upvote and for your excellent program!
Yep. The boys took a serious bad rap on that one. Could have been karma I suppose.
I think those two young bucks are going to enter the story again. Just guessing, you know.
You are really doing a terrific job with this telling, Janton. I really like your style.
Howdy sir bigtom13! thank you for the kind words and I'm enjoying the story too much, I like these guys and don't want it to end! lol.

Howdy there esteemapp! Thanks so much for the upvote and for the great platform!
Hi janton, I am coming to realise that Texan girls really rock, there is something special about them. Boy oh boy, once you had a reputation back then look out! Or hang on, human nature has not changed too much has it? haha.
haha! you're right about Texas girls. They're smart, tough and ornery! lol. Human nature ..no it hasn't changed a bit and you are guilty until proven innocent!
Good to hear janton. By the way all the non-Texan girls are smart and tough too, haha
howdy angiemitchell! yes, anytime I say anything about Texas girls I always get reminded that is isn't just Texas girls! lol.
Haha, glad to hear that everyone keeps you on your toes!
haha! yes they sure do, they don't let me get away with something like that! lol.
Reading their story, one has to sympathize to think they were living a respectable life and then get wrongly accused. Etta is a beautiful looking woman and loves her dog. I hope she survives whatever happens next. U&R.
Howdy redheadpei! Did you see the movie? In this part of the story they kind of made things up, Hollywood did. lol. Yes, it was a totally raw deal because they had genuinely given up the outlaw life.
It’s been a long time when I saw the movie. I remember what happened to the two men but not to Etta.
Howdy again redheadpei! I haven't seen the movie for almost 50 years! lol..hard to believe it's been that long. I'll be talking about her in a couple of posts coming up. Is it still snowing there?
We had a few days reprieve from the snow. It rained and took most away. How’s things down your way?
Howdy tonight redheadpei! well, down here the weather has been kinda wet, all the ponds are clear full and it will be perfect if it stops raining now. It was about 53 degrees today, I think that's about 11 in Celcius but in a week or two it will be in the 70s and up to 80 everyday. Then the next month we'll be hitting the 90;s which is like 35 C then it really gets hot in June, July and August. The grass is already growing again.
That would be crazy if the Pinkertons did the robbery to draw heat on Butch.
howdy sir madgoat! that would be brilliant wouldn't it? And that could have happened, I never thought of that because it's too twisted! lol. Great job!
First about the joke, let me clear this out. You mean spiderweb hanging of the rabbit ears antenna, right? Because that is hilarious, lol.
So now I see what happened there, oh my gosh!!! Speaking of bad KARMA!!! Will they find out who were the bank robbers? It will not going to help anyway, because our boys will be charged with their passed crimes regardless. Well, will see, I am just going to wait here!!!
Howdy MIss Lena! sorry this is so late, I took off from steemit for a few hours. Yes you got the joke right, the spiderweb hanging from the rabbit ears!
Yes the authorities were convinced that it was our boys so there was no way to convince them otherwise.
Howdy Janton! There is no need to apologise, it's just a Steemit and I know you had plans with Mrs.J. Anyway, but they I am assuming they had to investigate and finding out it wasn't them. I guess, will see in your next chapter.
Howdy again MIss Lena! How are you this afternoon and what are you doing? Working with your new camera? Thinking up new recipes? Spending time with the grandkids? Enjoying the beautiful, mild, sunny weather? spending time writing to your legions of fans on all the social media sites you belong to? lol.
