Sianok Canyon in West Sumatra, 1911

Sianok canyon is a steep valley on the border of Bukittinggi, West Sumatra. The valley is long and winding, offering magnificent and stunning views.

Sianok canyon is about 100 meters deep, stretches 15 kilometers long and 200 meters wide, and is part of the fault that separates the island of Sumatra.

This photo was taken by Jean Demmeni, a photographer of French-Madurese descent living in West Sumatra, and the archive is kept by Leiden University in the Netherlands.

In the photo caption it is stated that this place is named Karbouwengat in Fort de Kock (Bukittinggi). Called Karbouwengat or Buffalo Sangeet because many buffalo roam in its ravine.
