in #history7 years ago

Gilgamesh, the best known of all ancient Mesopotamian heroes. Numerous tales in the Akkadian language have been told about Gilgamesh, and the whole collection has been described as an odyssey—the odyssey of a king who did not want to die. Some historians believe that Gilgamesh was a real king of the city of Uruk between 2700 and 2500 B.C.E. According to the story, Gilgamesh was part god and part man. His mother was Ninsun, a goddess, and his father, Lugalbanda, was the half-god king of Uruk.of Gilgamesh together into a single story. Its basic theme is the king's quest for fame, glory, and immortality through heroic deeds. One of the best-known parts of the epic is the tale of a great flood, which may have inspired the story of Noah and the flood in the Bible. The first half of the story discusses Gilgamesh, king of Uruk, and Enkidu, a wild man created by the gods to stop Gilgamesh from oppressing the people of Uruk. ... Gilgamesh wins and the two become friends. He has grown up and returns to Uruk as a person who understands responsibility and loss. The second iteration of the hero's journey in The Epic of Gilgamesh depicts a quest for wisdom. When Gilgamesh sets out to find Utnapishtim, he believes that he is searching for immortality. Ultimately, this proves impossible.
