Its Thrsday so I thought I would highlight some stories from this day in days gone by 


1972: The last Ground Combat Units pull out of Vietnam

while roughly 40,000 troops remained with the Airforce and the Navy, This effectively was the final withdraw of the Army and the Marines 


1994: Major League Baseball goes on Strike

After the expiration of the collective bargaining agreement, a new agreement could not be agreed upon and negotiations broke down finally resulting in a Strike and causing the cancellation of the 94 World Series for the first time in 89 years. The Strike ended April 2, 1995 after a court injunction against the team owners. Baseball has never fully recovered as the American Pastime


1965: The Watts Riots Begin 

 In the predominantly african american Watts neighborhood of Los Angeles, racial tension reaches a breaking point after two white policemen scuffle with a black motorist suspected of drunken driving. A crowd of spectators gathered near the corner of Avalon Boulevard and 116th Street to watch the arrest and soon grew angry. The riot lasted 5 days and eventually broke up after 1000 national guard had been called in. 


1831: Old Glory gets her Name 

 William Driver of Salem, Massachusetts, is the first to use the term “Old Glory” in connection with the American flag, when he gives that name to his flag aboard the ship, the Charles Daggett. 


 1846: Birth Of the Smithsonian

The Smithsonian Institution is established in Washington through the bequest of James Smithson.  Which he intended to be an "establishment for the increase and diffusion of knowledge."
