Driving force of economic growth of korea, that is 새마을 운동 (Saemaul Undong) = New Village Movement

today I would like to tell you 새마을 운동 (Saemaul Undong) in South Korea to Steemers.

*새 means New. 마을 means Village. 운동 means Movement

새마을 운동 (Saemaul Undong) is the national movement to modernize the rural communities that started by president Park Chung-hee in 1970s in South Korea.

*the main purpose of The Saemaul Undong,

-to modernize the rural communities and to pull out of poverty, from the small villages, which continued to be mired in poverty (korea was the poorest country in the world after the korean war was over) and to get rid of old habits and traditions which were seen as superstitious.

• the solgans of The Saemaul Undong : self-help and collaboration

• to encourage community members to participate in the development process. the movement focused on improving the basic living conditions and environments

The Saemaul Undong did much to improve infrastructure in rural South Korea, bringing modernized facilities such as , bridges and roads in rural communities.

after that the movement spread through factories and urban areas as well, and became a nationwide modernization movement and became a cornerstone of the economic development

president Park Chung Hee wrote and composed the 새마을 노래 (saemaul song) for 새마을 운동 (Saemaul Undong)

song(새마을 노래) played throughout the country at specific time.
