Quote of the day by Bertrand Russell

in #history7 years ago

"There are certain things that our age needs and certain things that it should avoid.
It needs compassion and a wish that mankind will be happy;
It need the desire for knowledge and the determination to eschew pleasant myths;
It needs, above all, courageous hope and the impulse for creativeness.
The things that it must avoid, and that has brought it to the brink of catastrophe, are cruelty, envy and greed, competitiveness, search for irrational subjective certainty, and what the Freudians call, 'the death -wish'.
The root of the matter is a very simple and old-fashioned thing, a thing so simple that I am almost ashamed to mention it, for fear of the derisive smile with which wise cynics will greet my words.
The thing I mean.... is love, Christian love or compassion.
If you feel this, you have a motive for existence, a guide in action, a reason for courage, an imperative necessity for intellectual honesty.
If you feel this, you have all that anyone should need in the way of religion.
Although you may not find happiness, you will never know the deep despair of those whose life is aimless and void of purpose; for there is always something you can do to diminish the awful sum of human misery"

Who is Bertrand Russell?

Today I watched a video that was titled 'The council of the 300', or something like that. It was the usual documentary about bloodlines and super-wealthy elites, who covertly pull the strings of people we believe to be the puppet-masters. I'm sure if you type in the word 'council of 300', you will find the video I am talking of. The Council of the 300 have indeed left me wanting to find out more, but for now they are not to be the focus of this particular post.
About three-quarters of the way through the video of 'the 300', the narrator mentions a study-paper that was written by a famous philosopher, named Bertrand Russell. It referenced him in relation to his study-paper, titled 'The Impact of Science on Society' that was released in 1942. In the video the narrator used a video clip of someone speaking before a crowd about secret societies and social conditioning. Whilst mentioning the works of Mr Russell he also issued a challenge for anyone to find a copy of this particular study-paper.

Born in 1872, Bertrand used to be a royal pain-in-the-bottom and protested aloud about his right not to go to war(WW1). This stance was contrary to the what was expected of a 'Great-Brit' and with Bertrand aligning himself with the No-Conscription movement, he soon found himself being removed as a lecturer at Cambridge university. Amongst other things, Bertrand would also lose his chance of an appointment in the United States. With Bertrand being such a talented writer and with his ability to simplify his philosophies for all to understand, it didn't take long for him to become a target and more to the point, he became a threat... In 1918, Bertrand Russell wrote something so provocative, that the authorities decided enough was enough and sentenced Mr Russell to 6 months in prison.

Bertrand was 46-years-old at the time he was sent to serve some 'porridge'. By then he had established himself as a mathematical genius and a philosopher worth listening to. Although this man had been born into unimaginable wealth and privilege and also noting that Mr Russel was orphaned at a young age. I find it amazing that he still managed to write with such compassion for humanity. I am only part way through his final piece of work(The Impact of Science on Society, published 1942) and I already have a page full of notes, quotes, and references. So I invite you all to enjoy this amazing philosophical insight into the construct of society.

This informative article, it is easy to read and captures my imagination. This is the motivation for me to learn more about Bertrand Russell! Thank you!

Me too. Some styles of writing are just too good to ignore. Another of my favourites is Babel Library. It is only a short book and if you type the title in with the name James Corbett it should take you to an audio-book.
Thank you for the comments and support :)

Good article, and love Bertrand Russell's quote. The further one lingers in this arena of truth searching the more nuggets of information are revealed of all the people and events that have shaped the status of where we find ourselves today.

Thanks for the comment. This is the first I have heard of him and I can't wait to get back to reading this. It sounds wonderful and his thought process is very intriguing. Sounds like he has done plenty of previous work but a lot is about mathematics and it would probably go over my head.

I also appreciate the link to the archive library.

Bertrand Russell is one of those influential man in history!

It's amazing what can pass you by. I have never heard of him before and from what I have read in the intro you are spot on. He sounds a very wise owl. Can't wait to read more.
