In 1842, HK Island was ceded to Britain. The British conducted a population census and there were 4200 people living in HK Island. 2000 of them were living in Stanley at the south HK Island. At the time, the British needed to confirmed their base in HK Island. Stanley should be the best place as it was furthest away from China and had the most population. But finally, the British chose Central. One of the reason was pirates.

1842年，香港島被割讓給英國，英國人接管香港島後，為香港島做了一次人口統計，統計結果為香港島共有4200人口，其中2000人居於香港島南面的赤柱。其後，英國人要決定在香港島的總基地，本來，赤柱是最好的地方，因為赤柱位於南面，遠離中國，且是當時香港島最多人口的地方，但最後，英國人選了中環，原因除了我在前文曾說過方便拿下尖沙咀外，還有一個原因，就是海盗。

Who is the most famous pirate in the history of China. I believe people who know the history of China will answer Cheung Po Tsai. Cheung owned 30000-40000 followers and was the king of the South China Sea at around 1800-1810. If you had watched “Pirates of the Caribbean 3” before, you may know the character Sao Feng casted by Chow Yun-dat. Sao Feng is based on Cheung Po Tsai! But we are not talking about Cheung Po Tsai today, we will talk about Chui A-poo.

中國近數百年最著名的海盗是誰？我相信認識中國歷史的都會知道是張保仔！全盛時期的張保仔曾有三四萬海盗，縱橫南中國海，而張保仔的根據地也是香港！如果大家有看《加勒比海盗3》，當中周潤發飾演的嘯風船長就是取材自張保仔！不過，張保仔活躍的年份是1800年左右，所以這次我說的不是張保仔，而是徐亞保。

Chui A-poo was the most powerful pirates of Hong Kong and South China Sea at the time when British first got HK Island. He and his boss Shap Ng-tsai owned 5000 pirates, 23 battle ships and 18 Cannons. In comic One Piece, the Charater Scratchmen Apoo, one of the Worst Generation, is based on Chui A-poo.

徐亞保是繼張保仔後香港以至南中國海勢力最大的海盜，他與上司十五仔的海盜團共有約5000人，戰船23艘，大炮18門，雖不及張保仔，但也是當時香港最強的海盜勢力，稱霸香港島南面海岸一帶，有趣的是，漫畫One Piece海賊王中十一超新星的阿普，就是以徐亞保為原型。

The home of Chui was Wong Ma Kok Village in Stanley. In 1849, there were two British officers was drunk in Stanley. They went to the Wong Ma Kok Village and harassed the female. At that moment, Chui was just at the village. He was very angry and killed the two officers. Because of the incident, the British finally decided to wipe Chui’s pirate crew out. The British navy formed alliance with Chinese navy and attack the crew of Chui and Shap Ng-Tsai. Shap soon surrendered and Chui was arrested in 1850.

Although Chui killed two British, it was heard that Bonham, the Governor of HK, knew it’s the fault of the two British Officer. He hired a lawyer for Chui. We don’t know it’s true or not. We only know Chui was sentenced to manslaughter and banished to Australia. Before the banish, Chui killed himself.

徐亞保的老家就是赤柱的黃麻角村，1849年，有兩名英國軍官在赤柱喝醉了酒，走到了黃麻角村生事及調戲婦女，無獨有偶，徐亞保當時就在黃麻角村，一氣之下竟把兩名軍官殺了。就因此事，終令英國下定決心要消滅徐亞保海盜團。英國海軍聯同清朝水師聯合追擊徐亞保，他的上司十五仔也受到牽連，很快，十五仔就被清朝招安了，但徐亞保拒絕投降，最終在1850年被捕。

雖然徐亞保殺了英國軍官，但相傳當時的港督文咸自知錯的是英國軍官，竟派了大律司為徐亞保辯護，是真是假無人得知，我們只知道徐亞保在1851被判誤殺，流放澳洲，而徐亞保在流放前自殺身亡。

I was very interested about the Wong Ma Kok Village so I went to Stanley to visit it. Today, Stanley is a major tourism spot of Hong Kong, as well as the major residential area of foreigner. In Stanley, you may visit the bar at the seaside and enjoy the wind, the sun, and the sea with a beer. You may also visit the Stanley market and look for some souvenir whish is full of Chinese style.

我對徐亞保曾居住的赤柱黃麻角村很感興趣，便特地到了赤柱尋找黃麻角村。今天的赤柱已是香港主要旅遊區，也是外國人的主要居住地，在赤柱，你可坐在海邊的酒吧，喝著啤酒，吹著海風，感受陽光與海邊的景色。你也可以到赤柱市集，尋找特色紀念品，和充滿中國風的小玩意。

But the Wong Ma Kok village was dismantled already when the Government built a barrack at the place in 1930. To settle the eight families of the village, the Government build eight houses at the seaside of Stanley for them. Today, the 8 houses are HK Grade II historic buildings. Some of the later generations are still living there. As the houses are full of characteristic and next to the sea, many people offer an attractive price to buy but are refused. Luckily, I found some photos inside the house from newspaper. Let’s enjoy it!

不過，原來黃麻角村早在1930因政府興建軍營和炮台而被拆了，不過政府特意在赤柱海邊建了八間小屋給當時住在黃麻角村的八家人。今天八間屋仍在，已是二級歷史建築，而當年八家人仍有幾家的後人依然住在這裡，由於這八間屋的特式和鄰近海邊，很多人曾出高價希望購買都被拒絕。很幸運我在網上報章找到一些屋內的照片，給大家過過癮。

Stanley is a beautiful place. There are lot of interesting stories. I will talk about it later. And the pirates, although Chiu was dead, there were still lot of pirates remaining. And the result was the curfew of HK for 50 years! I will talk about it in the next posts.

赤柱是一個很美麗的地方，也有很多有趣的故事，有機會的話我會給大家一一介紹。至於海盜問題，雖然徐亞保死了，但仍有不少殘餘海盜在香港水域肆掠，結果導致了香港接近50年的宵禁，下一次，就讓我們看看這個故事。
