Hip hop music is a cultural movement that began in the Bronx, New York City, during the 1970s. It encompasses four key elements: MCing (rapping), DJing, breakdancing (b-boying), and graffiti art. Musically, hip hop is known for its rhythmic beats, sampling, and lyrical flow, often addressing social issues, personal experiences, and cultural identity.

Key eras in hip hop include:
1. The Old School (1970s–1980s) - Artists like Grandmaster Flash, Afrika Bambaataa, and Run-D.M.C. shaped the genre with party anthems and street storytelling.
2. The Golden Age (late 1980s–1990s) - Known for lyrical complexity and diverse styles. Icons like Tupac Shakur, The Notorious B.I.G., Nas, and Wu-Tang Clan emerged.
3. The 2000s and Beyond - Hip hop became global, blending with other genres. Artists like Jay-Z, Eminem, Kanye West, Drake, and Kendrick Lamar pushed boundaries.

Today, hip hop influences fashion, language, politics, and even technology. Subgenres like trap, conscious rap, and drill continue to evolve the sound.
